Michael Jackson's brother on Detroit Motown Museum's future: 'I have some ideas I want to implement'

Jermaine Jackson and three of his brothers will perform June 12 at Detroit's Motor City Casino.

DETROIT, MI -- Michael Jackson's brother Jermaine appears to have a bold vision for the future of Detroit's Motown Historical Museum at 2648 W. Grand Boulevard.

And Jermaine Jackson told MLive.com he intends to share it with the powers that be who helped preserve Motown Records founder Berry Gordy's hub for music innovation and make it such a landmark.

"I have some ideas I want to implement and share with the people there," said Jackson, when asked if he'd like to see a bigger, more prominent Motown Museum in Detroit. "I would love to see an institution where you have to look up at it.

"When you think of Motown, it's a pyramid; it's something you can't just look at, you have to look up at it."

Jackson didn't get into specifics about his vision during a phone interview Friday but said he'd like to see a revamped Motown Museum that's "monumental" because it has worldwide appeal.

"I'm going to find the the time to meet with certain people there (in Detroit)," Jackson said. "Who knows (Motown) better than me? I lived it, and I was part of it.

"And (Berry Gordy) was my father-in-law for many years, and I have the utmost respect for him."

Jackson could possibly meet with those in charge of the Motown Historical Museum in a matter weeks since he'll be in town with brothers Jackie, Marlon and Tito for a June 12 concert at Detroit's Motor City Casino.

Tickets for the 8 p.m. show range in from from $55 to $89.90 and can be purchased at Ticketmaster.com or any Ticketmaster outlet.

The Motown Historical Museum celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2010 and has been the target of expansion/relocation speculation for decades.

Crain's Detroit Business reported in 2009 that Gordy once made an attempt in the mid-2000s to launch Motown Center, a $28 million educational and entertainment complex at Woodward Avenue and the Fisher Freeway

Gordy's plan, according to Crain's, would've have still kept the Motown Historical Museum (also known has Hittsville U.S.A.) at its current West Grand Boulevard location.

The property Gordy reportedly sought to redevelop is now part of Detroit Red Wings and Tigers owner Mike Ilitch's plan to build a $450 million hockey arena and accompanying entertainment district.

The museum on West Grand Boulevard was founded by Gordy's sister, the late Esther Gordy Edwards, in 1985 and considered one of Southeast Michigan’s most popular tourist destinations.

It features Studio A, where their favorite artists and groups recorded much-loved music, and is home to the restored upper flat where Berry Gordy lived with his young family during the company’s infancy.
