Two. Years.

Who remembers watching CNN newsreader Anderson Cooper’s face, as Conrad Murray, as part of his defence for killing Michael Jackson, spontaneously sprang into the song, The Little Boy That Santa Claus Forgot?

In April.
Conrad Murray was released from prison this morning. He served two years for the homicide of Michael Jackson. Two years. Homicide. Michael Jackson.
Conrad Murray killed a man who trusted him. A man, who, before being corrupted by ultimately substantiated paranoia, was trusting to a fault. A man who looked at people and saw them as children, and loved them as their mothers did; a man who wrote, “Children show me in their playful smiles the divine in everyone. This simple goodness shines straight from their hearts and only asks to be loved.”
Trust is a trait with double edges. A misguided trust in the goodness of all people brought Michael both unbridled love from his fans, as well as acts of malevolence from those jealous of his successes or covetous of his catalogue. Not that this malevolence was always overt, far from it; as Michael also said, after his rude awakening, “There are people out there who don’t actively hold you back as much as they work quietly on your insecurities so that you hold yourself back.”
Lou Reed died yesterday. One wouldn’t imagine there was a great deal in common between the two great artists, but I came across a connection which speaks volumes about Michael’s misunderstood humility:
The former Czech President, Václav Havel, had hosted Michael in Prague Castle during Michael’s stay in the Czech capital on the HIStory Tour, in 1996. Nine years later, during the 2005 trial, Havel and Lou Reed, who were great friends, conducted an onstage conversation at Prague’s Švandovo divadlo drama theatre. They only disagree once all evening, over Michael.
Havel had invited Michael to stay with him in 1996 because he was interested in him as a “civilization phenomenon.” However, Havel moaned to the audience that, instead of spending time with him discussing his cultural significance, Michael preferred to “go to the third courtyard and say hello to the children.” The audience laughed at Havel’s snide dig at Michael, but Lou Reed, annoyed at the audience’s reaction, jumped to Michael’s defence, saying, “He’s a great singer, a great dancer, then there’s all this other stuff and people don’t pay attention… I think Michael Jackson is one of the greatest dancers in the world … the Fred Astaire of our generation.”
“I recognise his skills, but I’m not a fan,” Havel responded. .
“He wasn’t in my castle,” retorted Reed, eliciting a bigger laugh than Havel managed to muster with his lazy cynicism.
Havel had hosted Michael and harboured his bullying anecdote for nine years before this event. It took a non-judgmental mind such as Lou Reed’s to see beyond the painfully superficial perspective of the Czech President. It’s yet another example of treating Michael as a pariah because of his differences; of cynics abusing their positions and Michael’s vulnerabilities to intensify his insecurities for their own gain; of referring to encounters with him as “meeting the freak,” as the slavish, fat cat employers referred to their starving and emaciated employee, as was exposed for all to see in the emails of the AEG trial. Their employee, a man that co-owned the most valuable music catalogue on the planet, who was now somehow in a position in which he was frantically desperate to be able to earn enough money to put a roof over his children’s heads. A man that was doing this by spreading his message; one that demanded the world prioritise a universal love and respect for children and childhood.
Of course, the AEG trial concluded with the decision that Conrad Murray had been hired by the company as a competent doctor – a man now seeking to retrieve his licence to practice medicine, whilst also being completely free to cash in on his crime.
