WORKING on Cirque du Soleil's extravagant Michael Jackson stage tribute was a "bittersweet experience" for Jackson's long-time collaborator, Travis Payne.
"Not a day went by without me really missing him," says the Emmy-nominated choreographer. "I had never gone through a Michael Jackson process without him. That was very tough at times. But the end result was worth it."
Payne was reunited with costume designer Zaldy Goco, drummer Jonathan "Sugarfoot" Moffett and many other members of Jackson's creative team for The Immortal World Tour, an arena show inspired by the pop star's music.
"There have been many productions since Michael's passing to celebrate him but none with so many of us coming together," says Payne.
"I really think that's why it works. For many of us, the last time we worked together was with Michael. I certainly hope he would be proud of what we have done."
Payne says Jackson was a long-time fan of Cirque du Soleil and had always intended to work with the company which has its headquarters in Montreal.
"The opportunity just never presented itself," says the choreographer, who sees Cirque and Jackson's shared appreciation of fantasy, escapism and sheer scale as an excellent fit.
Michael Jackson never did anything by halves. Cirque has a similarly healthy appreciation of extraordinary production values - which explains why four jumbo jets are required to carry the cast, crew, costumes and props. The tour even carries its own washing machines and driers to take proper care of more than 250 costumes (the dancers haveup to eight changes).
Among the props is a giant, 1.8m white spangled glove and a pair of 2.4m-long penny loafers.
At the core of the show, however, is Jackson's music. Cirque has unprecedented access to Jackson's master tapes.
More than 35 songs - including Dangerous, Thriller, Beat It, They Don't Care About Us, Man In the Mirror, Don't Stop Till You Get Enough and Billie Jean - are interpreted by acrobats, contortionists, dancers and musicians.
The stripped-back vocal track is so pristine, you can hear Jackson snap his fingers and stomp his feet.
The tour, has now been on the road for 18 months. It has been so successful, a second show, MJ1, is opening in Las Vegas this weekend.
Payne, also known for his work with Beyonce, Lady Gaga and Madonna, collaborated with Jackson for more than 15 years.scene from Cirque du Soleil's Michael Jackson: The Immortal World Tour. Picture: OSA Images
The choreographer worked on the This Is It tour at the time of the singer's death, and was recently called to give evidence in a civil hearing concerning Jackson's death.
The experience brought back painful memories. Payne sees The Immortal World Tour as an opportunity to recast Jackson as more than a tragic figure.
"All great artists have a certain amount of tragedy - that's where the art comes from," he says.
"But with Michael it has been so polarising. There has been so much speculation about him over the years, because he was such a private person.
"I feel like we have gotten so far away from his art in past years, now we can just return to the great songs and the great imagery and the great ideas that endure."
Having said that, he says the tour is more than a faithful "tribute show".
"You really can't do a Michael Jackson show without Michael Jackson," says Payne. "This is our interpretation of what he would have done. What we have learned from him - personally and through his work. To translate that into new experiences."Traduzione:
Più di 35 canzoni - tra cui Dangerous, Thriller, Beat It, essi Don't Care About Us, Man In the Mirror, Don't Stop Till You Get Enough e Billie Jean - sono interpretati da acrobati, contorsionisti, ballerini e musicisti.

Cirque du Soleil artist Sarah Guyard-Guillot dies after fall in Vegas
LAS VEGAS - A Paris-born performer in Cirque du Soleil's "Ka" died after a fall during a show in Las Vegas.
Sarah Guyard-Guillot was pronounced dead late Saturday night at a hospital after falling about 50 feet from the show's stage.
Witnesses told the Las Vegas Sun that the accident occurred near the end of the production Saturday night at the MGM Grand.

Visitor Dan Mosqueda of Colorado Springs, Colo., said the 31-year-old acrobatic performer was being hoisted up the side of the stage when it appeared that she slipped free of her safety wire and plummeted to an open pit below the stage.
"Initially, a lot of people in the audience thought it was part of the (show)," he told the Sun. "But you could hear screaming, then groaning, and we could hear a female artist crying from the stage."
The show momentarily continued, then stopped. Minutes after the accident, a recorded announcement informed audience members that refunds or vouchers to future shows would be offered, and the crowd was dismissed.
Cirque du Soleil founder Guy Laliberte issued a statement Sunday praising Guyard-Guillot and saying performances of "Ka" have been canceled until further notice.
Guyard-Guillot, a mother of two children, had been with the original cast of "Ka" since 2006, and had been an acrobatic performer for over 20 years.
"I am heartbroken. I wish to extend my sincerest sympathies to the family. We are all completely devastated," Laliberte said. "We are reminded with great humility and respect how extraordinary our artists are each and every night. Our focus now is to support each other as a family."
Cirque officials are working with authorities investigating the accident and have offered their full cooperation, he added.
The Clark County Coroner's Office will rule on the cause of death.
The MGM Grand also issued a statement concerning the accident.
"Our company is deeply saddened by the loss of one of the talented KA artists Saturday night," it reads. "The thoughts and prayers of our employees are with the performer's family, the cast of KA, and the entire Cirque family during this difficult time."
The accident occurred while Cirque's top executives, including president Daniel Lamarre, were in Las Vegas to celebrate the premiere of "Michael Jackson One" at Mandalay Bay.
On Wednesday night, a performer in a preview performance of that show suffered a mild concussion after missing the protective pad below an act and landing on the stage. That artist is expected to return to the show.

Cirque Du Soleil's one-legged star Jean Sok dances rings around the critics
"PROFESSIONAL dancer" might seem like an unusual career choice for someone who is missing one leg.
But try telling that to Jean Sok, who is about to arrive in Australia as part of Cirque Du Soleil's Michael Jackson tribute The Immortal World Tour.
"Any time I want to find I job, I audition as a normal person because I don't feel like I have any limitations,'' he says.Jean Sok, the one-legged dancer who performs with Cirque Du Soleil
"It then depends on the people (who are watching), whether they see any limitations. I let them make up their own mind. ''
So far, the 27-year-old performer says he hasn't experienced too many problems.
Long-term Michael Jackson collaborator Travis Payne was moved to tears the first time he saw Sok dance - at the Paris auditions for The Immortal World Tour, an arena-style spectacular that reimagines more than 35 of the pop icon's best-known songs - including Dangerous, Thriller, Beat It, They Don't Care About Us, Man In the Mirror, Don't Stop Till You Get Enough, and Billie Jean.
"He is exactly the type of artist Michael would love to see inspired by his work because by all accounts he is an underdog. But when he dances, he is one of the best on stage.
"It's a very level playing field at that point, because he is so special in his artistry."One-legged dancer Jean Sok performs Dancing Machine.
After seeing The Immortal World Tour in Las Vegas, US singer Cee Lo Green invited Sok to perform on stage with him at the 2012 Billboard awards, where according to most accounts, the gravity-defying Frenchman stole the show.
Sok, who prefers not to talk about how he lost his leg, started dancing at the age of 15.
There were people, he admits, who attempted to discourage him from taking dance up as a career.
"But there were also a lot of people who encouraged me, so I took the positive (approach.)
"I knew it might take me longer, but little by little I tried, and eventually I got to where I am right now."
While Sok admits to experiencing doubts over the last 12 years in relation to his chosen profession, none of them related to the fact that he was missing a limb.
"Sometimes I felt like I lacked inspiration,'' he says.
"But I never doubted that I could be a dancer."TRADUZIONE:
Cirque Du Soleil's one-legged star Jean Sok balla anelli intorno i critici
'A volte mi sentivo come mi mancava l'ispirazione, ', dice.

Michael Lives On Via Cirque Du Soleil
Ysabel Cacho , working for the Philippine Daily Enquirer, has written an excellent piece about her feelings after Michael passed away and how the Cirque Du Soleil’s ”Michael Jackson The Immortal World tour” in the Philippines helped her through those tough times.
We hope you enjoy her account,
“When I first heard about Michael Jackson’s death in June 2009, I looked straight into the eye of the newsbearer and said, “That’s impossible. He’s immortal.”
In the weeks that followed, news programs, magazines, and biographies confirmed his passing; Jackson was, after all, a mere mortal like you and me.
However, as my cousins and I sat inside the Asian World Expo auditorium in Hong Kong, I realized that others shared my sentiments on Jackson’s “immortality.” Not only did Cirque du Soleil believe in it; they even created a show about it.
It was not really surprising that Cirque du Soleil came up with such an idea because I felt that I had grown up with this award-winning circus act. I watched my first Cirque show in 2005 also in Hong Kong during its “Quidam” tour. Before I stepped inside the Grand Chapiteau, otherwise known as the iconic blue-and-yellow big top, my mother pulled me to point out that this particular circus was “different” than the others.
When I asked how so, she simply said, “It’s artistic. And there are no animals.” As an impressionable 12-year-old, I honestly thought, what kind of circus had no animals and expected to entertain everyone?
Cirque proved that it was indeed different. It was really more than “different and artistic”—but rather brilliant, breathtaking, haunting, magical and, dare I say it, life-changing.
After the show, I stepped out high from the adrenaline; I had just been introduced to an entirely new world of art, the kind that fused acrobatics with its story lines.
I wanted to run away and join Cirque myself. But because of my inability to touch my toes and do a proper split, I would have to settle for something else.
I spent the next eight years following Cirque’s every move through the news and its DVDs. I was blessed enough to watch a number of its live performances such as “Zaia,” “Varekai,” and “Saltimbanco” in Asia, as well as “The Beatles Love” in Las Vegas.
“Love” was a spectacular show that reduced me to tears.
But I was skeptical when I entered the arena to see the “Michael Jackson The Immortal World Tour.” Four years after his death, there have been Michael Jackson memorial concerts too numerous to mention.
Yet what made the Cirque show stand out was that it interpreted Jackson’s life and music through dance and aerobics.
There was never a dull moment onstage. Cirque’s version of “Dancing Machine” was literally that: a dancing performer strapped to a makeshift machine. One scene featured a femme fatale character on a pole, leaving everyone drooling as the performer swung around to “Dangerous.”
“Human Nature” took a more whimsical turn with the classic Cirque act: hoop aerialists spinning 50 feet in the air while the background transformed into a large galaxy.
Another act featured two aerialists strapped to one another as they skillfully glided through the auditorium to “I Just Can’t Stop Loving You,” taking the Jackson ballad to new heights.
During the “Is It Scary?” segment, one of the main characters flipped through a giant book to reveal a contortionist dressed as a reptile hidden between the pages.
For “Scream,” the stage turned into a giant trampoline. The men performed gymnastic routines while bouncing up and down the stage.
The show also featured Bubbles, Jackson’s chimpanzee pet, who made several appearances onstage.
The recreation of the gates of the Neverland Ranch was used as a prop a number of times, especially in the opening when performers danced to “Childhood.”
Another remarkable moment came when larger-than-life versions of Jackson’s sequined glove and black shoes with white socks appeared onstage and moved to the beat of one of his songs.
Jackson’s love for humanity was interpreted with the performers holding onto illuminated heart-shaped balloons in one segment.
The performers’ costumes were patterned after some of Jackson’s most iconic looks, from the red “Beat It” coat to his leather jacket from “Bad.” Some outfits even lit up and changed color.
The show ended with “Man in the Mirror,” with all performers waving flags from different nations as the heartwarming lyrics blared through the entire arena. The audience felt as though they had been given the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see Jackson “live.”
Cirque du Soleil brought him back to life through his music, his love and inspiring message, and passed on his legacy to thousands of adoring fans, new and old, making the King of Pop most certainly immortal.”TRADUZIONE:
Michael vive Via Cirque Du Soleil
Volevo scappare e Cirque unirsi a me.

Cirque du Soleil's Michael Jackson Tour Adding Arena Dates in 2014
"Michael Jackson: The Immortal World Tour" returns to North America for 40 more dates next year, looking to sell another 120,000 tickets
Michael Jackson: The Immortal World Tour," which recently became the ninth-top-grossing tour in history, will return to North American arenas in 2014, Billboard can exclusively reveal. We're in the process of fiercely booking it," Cirque du Soleil senior VP of touring shows Finn Taylor says. "We're mostly trying to do new markets so we can bring the show to new audiences, but there are some repeats of our more successful markets from the first tour."
Created in a partnership between the Michael Jackson estate and Cirque, "Immortal" will visit small to full-size arenas in the United States, Canada, Mexico and perhaps South America, beginning in March. The Cirque-promoted North American tour will perform in about 40 cities, but specific routing details weren't available at press time.
John Branca, who serves as co-executor of the Jackson estate with John McClain, says the upcoming "Immortal" performances could be slightly different from what audiences have already seen.
"I could see retooling the show in some ways and switching up some elements, but overall the format would stay very similar," Branca says. "There are certain numbers we might redo, but I don't think we would change the entire format."
In August, "Immortal" will once again visit Mexico City's Palacio de los Deportes, where it experienced some of its most lucrative business after grossing $13.2 million from 14 performances in 2012, according to Billboard Boxscore.
"We're positive we can sell another maybe 120,000-140,000 tickets in a second run," says Renato Herrera, executive VP at concert promoter OCESA, which operates the venue.
Herrera says there are also talks about taking "Immortal" to smaller arenas in such South American markets as Colombia, Argentina and Brazil.
Additionally, Cirque is in discussions with international promoters about bringing "Immortal" back to various parts of the world. With 407 shows under its belt, the trek has visited 25 countries on four continents. International dates haven't been confirmed beyond a lengthy run in Dubai, which goes through mid-January 2014.
"It's very tough to do one-offs with this show, because we have to bring all of the equipment with us," Taylor says. "We have to work on establishing some kind of regional leg or regional tour before we can get anywhere. There might be one or two Asian cities that want us, but we need six or seven to make it worthwhile."TRADUZIONE:

Cirque du Soleil’s latest show in Vegas is the second focusing on Michael Jackson’s music
LAS VEGAS Never underestimate the appeal of Michael Jackson.
More than four years after his untimely death, the pop behemoth has commanded the world of Cirque du Soleil, first with the astoundingly popular “Immortal World Tour,” which earned bragging rights as the highest-grossing 2012 road show with more than $163 million in ticket sales, and now with “Michael Jackson One,” the latest permanent Cirque show ensconced at Mandalay Bay Hotel and Casino.
While “Immortal” is set to return to arenas next year and “One” just opened in Las Vegas this summer, there is little concern about competition because the shows are significantly different, even though both are directed by Jamie King, who started his career as a dancer on Jackson’s “Dangerous” tour.
“Immortal,” which played multiple shows at Philips Arena in June 2012, tended to get lost in its own grandiosity, with a cast of more than 200 and a dizzying array of action required to gratify the senses in a cavernous arena.
“One,” by comparison, takes a step back. It’s more intimate, both physically — the theater capacity is 1,800 — and in its sense of storytelling.
“It’s a totally different approach,” said Travis Payne, an Atlanta native and choreographer for both shows.
“ ‘Immortal’ is much more of a rock concert, and ‘Michael Jackson One’ is more of a Broadway production. There’s more detail, and sometimes you lose that in the grandeur of an arena,” Payne said.
Jackson’s music, of course, is the centerpiece — about 28 songs or pieces of songs are heard during “One.” As well, his oft-documented irritation at the press and paparazzi is presented immediately upon entering the theater on screens decorated with screaming fake tabloid covers.
But the tone shifts with the arrival of four misfit teens — Clumsy, Shy, Smarty Pants and Sneaky — who are referred to as the “Heroes” and are the vague guides through the production (keep an eye on them wandering around the crowd a few minutes before showtime).
Clumsy learns to dance with the help of Jackson’s magical shoes during “Bad,” and, in one of the show’s most tender moments, Smarty Pants finds Jackson’s trademark fedora and reclaims her childlike innocence during his wistful version of “Smile.”
But the highlights of the 90-minute production come, of course, with the dancing. Though “One” features more typical Cirque-like behavior — wall-bouncing acrobatics, dazzling martial arts routines — it mostly concentrates on elaborate dance routines sprinkled with gymnastic prowess.
“One of our keywords with this show was ‘integrated,’ ” Payne said. “Really integrating the dance, the acrobatics. And then, of course, since it’s Michael Jackson, there’s a significant amount of dance information to include. I think we were able to find a wonderful balance. I always had to take into account the voice of Michael, what I thought he’d feel, or how he’d make it better.”
Without a doubt, Jackson would beam upon witnessing the awesome rhythmic gymnasts during “Smooth Criminal” perfectly aping his iconic “lean” and marvel at the “Cats” meets “The Walking Dead” costumes and faithful reproduction of dance moves during “Thriller” (careful, there might be a werewolf in the aisles).
Also helping to make “One” an immersive experience is the crisp sound. Those unaccustomed to concertgoing might find it exceedingly loud, but you will hear the tinkling synthesizers of “Human Nature” and breathy undertones of “Earth Song” with startling clarity.
“I wanted to make sure we could sonically inspire the entire room. You can have a ton of speakers, but it’s all about making the technology seem transparent,” said Kevin Antunes, musical director for “One.”
There are more than 5,800 speakers in the theater, in headrests and on walls and in places unseen. That precise sound is particularly noticeable on the show-closing “Black or White,” performed within a rousing, carnival-like scene.
Antunes said director King chose “Black or White” as the finale in part because of its iconic video that will ring familiar with the worldwide audiences who make pilgrimages to Vegas, and also to end on a powerful, uplifting note.TRADUZIONE:

The man in Michael’s mirror
Meet Jamie King, the celebrity choreographer who has interpreted Michael Jackson’s story for a Cirque Du Soleil show
Both Michael Jackson and Cirque du Soleil are mavericks in their field, says dancer and choreographer Jamie King, director of Michael Jackson: The Immortal World Tour, the massive show that rolls into Dubai this Monday.
“When I looked out my hotel window and saw all these huge buildings and the manmade islands, I felt, this is Michael,” King said during an interview with tabloid! in September. “Michael Jackson believed in the illogical. What you have created here is not just remarkable but seems just as illogical. I feel Michael would have wanted to be here. He was not just a global superstar but wanted the world to become one. And I’m proud that the Michael Jackson: The Immortal World Tour has brought his fans, old and young, together to celebrate his legacy, his music, his showmanship and the man who was a great teacher, all over the world”.
Brought by Duvent Events, Michael Jackson: The Immortal World Tour begins at Dubai World Trade Centre Arena on December 30 and will run until January 14 as part of Dubai Shopping Festival. The show, with 60-plus performers, is a fusion of visuals, dance, music and fantasy from the late King of Pop’s work. And King, as the director, is the pivot on which it rests.
“How can you not have a big show if you mix the world of Cirque du Soleil and Michael Jackson, the greatest entertainer in the world? As a writer-director it is a huge responsibility,” said King. “It has actors, artists, dancers, acrobats, and musicians… all things Michael Jackson loved. It’s a combination of theatre and a rock-style show. The music, the acrobatics, the dances are all larger than life. No one can be Michael — he was one of a kind. But what we can do, and respectfully, is making sure we have a cast that is diverse yet interprets Michael in the best possible way. There will be 65 Michaels on stage. It will be reliving, in the most spectacular way, those moments we all love about Michael Jackson”.TRADUZIONE:

King of Pop lives on in Cirque spectacleMichael Jackson went backward as he pushed pop forward.
As a child star, he performed with the lyrical insight and weariness of a grown man who'd seen it all. But as an adult, his music carried a wide-eyed naivete, a certain playfulness, and sometimes an annoying brattiness that dovetailed with his Peter Pan obsession.
This regression surfaced as his career reached intergalactic heights with the 1982 release of "Thriller," which became the biggest-selling pop album of all time - 25 million copies in the first year alone. Jackson was just 24 years old.
By then, his career had already been through a few groundbreaking phases - first as the focal point of The Jackson 5; then as a teen solo act, perhaps his most underrated period; and then as a member of the Jacksons, the grown-up and self-directed family group that broke from Motown and signed with Epic Records in 1975.
For most of the '80s, the King of Pop ruled the airwaves and MTV, the cable station that played few videos by black artists until Jackson's "Billie Jean." But Jackson's fall from grace is almost as mythic as his rise to superstardom: the plastic surgeries that changed his face from an inviting brown to a cold alabaster mask; the bizarre companionship with Bubbles, a chimpanzee; and the allegations of child sexual abuse in the early '90s, the proverbial nail in the coffin that contained his career.
Jackson's influence was immense long before he died in 2009. Since then, his glory years have been reassessed, often with a glossy coat of sentimentality, which usually happens when a pop legend is no longer around.
But few have been reimagined through the prodigiously outlandish lens of Cirque du Soleil, the Canadian entertainment franchise known for its tricked-out mix of circus arts and Vegas-style choreography.
Cirque's "Michael Jackson: The Immortal World Tour" stops at Scope in Norfolk today and Saturday. The spectacle featuring a small army of dancers, acrobats and a shifting set of dreamlike renderings of Jackson's iconic music videos was produced in full cooperation with the artist's estate. The show centers on Michael Jackson the fantasy, the untouchable star whose classics - "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough," "Beat It" and "Billie Jean" - became cultural touchstones. It's a gloriously celebratory show fully aware of itself, a family-friendly circus with dazzling props and costumes and dancers twisting and spinning in midair.
But, in a way, all the glitzy arena-size whimsy implies the chaos, and maybe even the darkness, of Jackson's private life; particularly in the last 20 years of it, when he largely retreated into a world of fantasy, perhaps to escape the trauma of an unhappy childhood. In the twilight years of his career, he lamented such sadness in song.
For those old enough to remember when Jackson was a brilliantly marketed pop ubiquity, when songs from "Thriller" spun on almost every radio format save for country, when he introduced the moonwalk to the mainstream on "Motown 25," and when his Jheri curl caught fire during the filming of a Pepsi commercial, the Cirque du Soleil show is a fantastic voyage through a marvel of a career, the likes of which will probably never happen again.
At least, not in a cynical era of social media obsessiveness and TMZ-style celebrity surveillance.
The Cirque show grandly reimagines the myth of the legend - the militaristic moves performed by trained professionals lacking Jackson's innate grace. His winsome voice haunts remixes of his hits as the set changes from a bedazzled street corner to a magical storybook come to life and several other opulent and expensive backdrops.
It's a nostalgic extravaganza and perhaps a fitting tribute to a man who transformed pop as he escaped into fantasy.

‘Immortal’ FactsAfter seeing the ‘Michael Jackson: Immortal’ show, Dathan Kazsuk updated his Biz Journal telling us he learned little known backstage facts, about the production.
“I like to consider myself a music connoiseur, so I made sure to catch Cirque du Soleil’s tribute to the King of Pop in ‘Michael Jackson: The Immortal’ at PNC Arena on April 1.
The performers entertained the crowd with two hours of MJ’s classics including ‘Human Nature,’ ‘Thriller,’ ‘Beat It’ and a mega-mix that got the entire audience on their feet dancing.
I was especially impressed with Jean “Bboy Hourth” Sok, one of the troupe’s performers, who was strutting his stuff with only one leg. While talking to the shows publicist, Laura Silverman, during the setup of the stage on April 1, I learned some interesting facts about the performance:
10 – That’s how many hours it takes the crew to unload and assemble the stage for ‘Michael Jackson: The Immortal’ before each performance.
100 – The number of extras hired to help the crew set up the stage for the live performance.
130 – The number of people that tour with ‘Michael Jackson: The Immortal.’ That includes 38 performers, 11 musicians and 52 crew members.
250 – The number of costumes used in Cirque du Soleil’s performance of ‘Michael Jackson: The Immortal.’
30 – The number of trucks it takes to transport all the set designs, costumes and equipment.
35 – The number of Michael Jackson songs performed in the two-hour set. This includes several mashups and one mega-mix.”

Cirque du Soleil: Acrobats real stars of Michael Jackson showThe King of Pop was celebrated by Cirque du Soleil in its fascinating production Michael Jackson: The Immortal World Tour before a sparse crowd last night in the Schottenstein Center.
The voice and vocals of Jackson, along with snippets of his videos, could be heard and seen throughout the two-hour spectacle. However, the music was performed by a live band, along with two backing vocalists, Jason Woods and jMarie. Together, they were in sync and sounded great. The two musical standouts were women — single-named cellist Mariko and mohawked guitarist Desiree Bassett, especially as they shared the solo to Beat It.
At its best, The Immortal World Tour captured the essence of Jackson’s message, and in hearing many of his best songs again, one is reminded that whatever one thought of him, he was deeply talented and put his all into his music.
The real stars of the show were the dancers and acrobats of Cirque, led by tall mime Mansour Abdessadok. He was the thread through most of the show, opening a door here, walking with Bubbles the chimp (Terrance Harrison) there, and twisting his rubbery limbs every which way. Also deserving special mention: one-legged dancer Jean Sok, twirling around on crutches.
There were “fanatics,” or clowns, if you will, resembling Jackson at various times of his career. Their antics opened both halves of the show.
Perhaps best of all was Anna Melnikova, who dazzled with her strength and flexibility while climbing a pole; contortionist Baaska Enkhbaatar, who turned the giant pages of a book in unbelievable ways; and aerial strap performers Giulia Piolanti and Igor Zaripov.
The only real negative was that the “scenes” of the show were vignettes on aspects of Jackson, as if they were part of a children’s book. If one looks at it in a literal or a linear sense, it didn’t succeed; but that probably wasn’t the point.
While not every scene was a hit, there were many highlights. Dancing Machine had the mime roll out to a motorized assembly line, with one dancer/robot connected by cables. On Smooth Criminal, dancers did the leaning motion, as others read newspapers while high up on street lamps. On They Don’t Care About Us, militaristic robots marched down the stage before acquiring hearts.
The simplest may have been the best scene, when the Jackson 5-aged Michael sang I’ll Be There to a solo piano.
Things could have ended there, but Cirque did a mash-up of his music — Can You Feel It, Don’t Stop Till You Get Enough, a too-short Billie Jean and Black or White; and the performers took their bows to Jackson’s show-closer, Man in the Mirror.
