Mi sento obbligato a scrivere questo blog oggi perché mentre sono seduto qui davanti al mio computer sono passati sette anni dal giorno in cui ho vissuto una specie di rivelazione riguardo la copertura dei media su Michael Jackson. Naturalmente avevo seguito il suo processo abbastanza attentamente, confrontando le trascrizioni del tribunale con la copertura mediatica e angosciandomi per i resoconti orrendamente parziali. Ma questi resoconti erano spesso almeno radicati nella realtà. I giornalisti travisavano le testimonianze nella maggior parte dei casi semplicemente 'mentendo' per omissione.
Quello che è successo sette anni fa è stato diverso. Ho assistito in prima persona alla costruzione di una storia puramente inventata, una storia che girato tutto il mondo rendendo ancora una volta Michael Jackson una figura ridicola globalmente e che è stata subito accettata come 'fatto'. Ancora oggi occasionalmente leggo notizie di stampa che menzionano questo evento inventato come se fosse una verità oggettiva. È stato anche indicato come un evento significativo nella carriera di Jackson nelle biografie.
Essere testimone della creazione del mito è stata un'esperienza che mi è rimasta da allora. Per un appassionato studente universitario di giornalismo è stata una conoscenza scioccante e triste delle macchinazioni più sinistre dei media.
Il 15 novembre del 2006 Michael Jackson ha partecipato ai World Music Awards a Londra, alla Earls Court Arena. Era la sua prima apparizione ufficiale nella capitale dopo la sua assoluzione nel giugno del 2005 e ho avuto la fortuna di essere lì. Alcuni fan erano stati in coda tutta la giornata per garantirsi le posizioni esclusive di fronte al palco, ma io ho dovuto andare all'università e poi andare a Londra la sera. Ciò nonostante i miei amici ed io abbiamo ottenuto facilmente un posto davanti alla barriera frontale, leggermente di lato e vicinissimo al banco di mixaggio. Abbiamo trascorso parte della serata chiacchierando con lo staff del suono e il personale della sicurezza, che ci ha dato la dritta che alle prove avevano sentito Jackson provare 'quella canzone sul salvare il mondo'. Quando Michael Jackson è finalmente apparso per ricevere un Diamond Award per aver venduto oltre 100 milioni di album la sala è esplosa. Ho visto Paul McCartney. Ho visto Madonna. Ho visto Prince. Ho visto George Michael. Non ho mai in vita mia, né prima né dopo, nessun artista provocare la risposta che Michael Jackson ha provocato quella sera. Ha ricevuto la più risposta più sostenuta e fragorosa che abbia mai visto.
E' rimasto in scena per diversi minuti per fare due brevi discorsi di accettazione, uno per il suo Diamond Award e uno per la presentazione di un Guinness World Record. Per tutta la durata dei suoi discorsi, ho sentito a stento una parola di quello che ha detto, nonostante il sistema audio a tutto volume. La maggior parte degli artisti ricevono un grande applauso quando salgono sul palco, poi il pubblico si calma. Michael Jackson ha provocato isteria. Urla e pianti. Non c'è stato un attimo di calma dal momento in cui è apparso su quel palco fino al momento in cui è sparito di nuovo dietro le quinte. E' stato uno spettacolo indimenticabile.
E' uscito di nuovo più tardi per una breve performance. Ha camminato sul palco sotto un'altra risposta cacofonica mentre il suo singolo filantropico We Are The World veniva diffuso negli altoparlanti. Ha cantato alcuni versi e sembrava guardare in modo supplichevole verso il mixer. Il mio sospetto è che i fan stessero facendo un tale baccano che non riusciva a sentirsi. E' stato come uno dei suoi concerti degli anni '80. Ho visto corpi estratti dalla folla e portati via in sedia a rotelle.
Pochi minuti più tardi qualcuno stranamente ha spento la musica mentre stava iniziando a cantare di nuovo. Non importa. La sala è impazzita ancora di più. E' stato un momento emozionante vederlo ricevere una tale accoglienza entusiastica dopo gli eventi dell'estate precedente. Dopo essere rimasto per un po' sulla passerella che sporgeva dal palco sulla folla si è apprestato a uscire, ma dato che il tifo aumentava - il pubblico non voleva perderlo di vista così velocemente - si è fermato e si è voltato. Scherzosamente ha alzato un dito sulle labbra come per fare la domanda, 'Devo restare o devo andare?' Le urla si sono intensificate.
E' rimasto un po', sorridendo, godendosi l'adulazione, poi ha alzato il pugno in un saluto trionfale del potere nero. Dopo si è voltato e con padronanza di sé è uscito di scena, con l'applauso che continuava intensamente mentre spariva dalla vista. Non ho mai visto un essere umano causare un tale caos. Era assordante.
Il giorno seguente ero di nuovo all'università. Mentre camminavo lungo il corridoio verso la mia prima lezione ho incontrato due compagne di classe. Guardarmi con compassione mi hanno chiesto: "Come è andata?" Ho cominciato raccontando loro la reazione formidabile ricevuta da Jackson e come ero rimasto scioccato dal livello di affetto. Era stato uno degli spettacoli più incredibili che abbia mai visto.
Ho notato che mi stavano guardando come se fossi un pazzo. Ho chiesto loro che cosa non andava ed è emerso che i media non stavano riportando gli avvenimenti della serata come erano accaduti. Una volta avuto accesso a internet ho scoperto che più pubblicazioni stavano sostenendo che era stato fischiato.
"Michael Jackson è uscito dal palco fra un coro di fischi la notte scorsa", ha scritto Tom Bryant del Mirror. "La folla, in attesa di una versione appropriata della sua canzone, ha fischiato la star che ha poi lasciato precipitosamente la scena".

Guardate il video qui sopra. Jackson non solo non 'lascia precipitosamente la scena' tra 'un coro di fischi', rimane sul palco per molto tempo dopo la fine della sua performance, assorbendo la reazione più enfaticamente positiva che abbia mai osservato a una cerimonia di premiazione.
Julia Kuttner del Daily record ha scritto una storia quasi identica: "Michael Jackson è uscito di scena tra un coro di fischi ieri sera - appena quattro versi nella sua prima performance nel Regno Unito da nove anni. Jacko aveva avuto un gong ai World Music Awards a Londra minuti prima, ma dopo aver cantato solo il ritornello del suo singolo di beneficenza We Are The World, si è fermato a dire più volte al pubblico: 'I love you'. Jackson ha lasciato precipitosamente il palco dopo essere stato fischiato dalla folla, che si aspettava una versione appropriata della canzone".
Anche l'Evening Standard è entrato in azione. I reporter Chris Elwell-Sutton e Valentine Low hanno scritto: "La sua riapparizione tanto decantata si è trasformata in un disastro imbarazzante. L'intera sua performance è consistita in un verso straziato, diverse note alte non azzeccate e un'uscita su un coro di fischi da parte del pubblico 'I love you', ha detto loro - che il sentimento fosse reciproco è una questione aperta".
Ero totalmente incredulo. Se un giornalista isolato avesse affermato che Michael Jackson era uscito tra i fischi non sarei stato così arrabbiato. Ogni professione ha le sue mele marce. Ma che più giornalisti che avevano partecipato ad un evento in cui Michael Jackson, in modo dimostrabile e categoricamente, non era stato fischiato, scrivessero articoli sostenendo che lo avevano fischiato ha dimostrato una chiara cospirazione tra più parti per inventare e perpetuare una storia fasulla.
Quel mito ha fatto il giro del mondo. Michael Jackson che esce di scena fra i fischi è diventato la principale fonte di ilarità in programmi di attualità e sulle celebrità. E ha generato ulteriori storie. Martin Hyde del Guardian ha ripetuto le menzogne, dichiarando Jackson 'l'ex Re del Pop' e affermando che era riuscito a fare solo poche strofe 'prima che i fischi iniziassero'. Il Sunday Mirror usò questa didascalia per la sua storia: "Il ritorno del mostro di plastica è stato veramente diabolico."

Facendo ricerche su questa storia anni dopo utilizzando il servizio di archivio giornali Infotrac, ho scoperto qualcosa di molto interessante; un precedente resoconto del Mirror che smentiva completamente la versione costruita affermata in seguito. In almeno una edizione cartacea del 16 novembre, un resoconto di Eva Simpson e Caroline Hedley diceva: "E' tornato! Michael Jackson è stato il grande vincitore agli award in cui ha fatto la sua prima performance pubblica da nove anni. La star è stata onorata con un Diamond Award per aver venduto più di 100 milioni di dischi nella sua carriera. Condotto da Lindsay Lohan l'evento ricco di star a Earls Court di Londra ha visto Jacko fare una straordinaria performance di We Are The World. Tu lo sei di sicuro, Jacko".
Così sembra che ad un certo punto è stata presa una decisione editoriale che invece di continuare a riferire ciò che era realmente accaduto, il giornale avrebbe riscritto gli eventi della serata per dire l'esatto contrario della verità - e diverse altre pubblicazioni stavano per fare la stessa cosa.
Mi sermbrava che i media avessero già deciso che storia volevano raccontare sull'apparizione di Michael Jackson a Londra, era solo un fastidio per loro che lui non avesse collaborato. Che la sua apparizione avesse indotto una potente effusione di adulazione - fan portati via in sedia a rotelle, come durante i tour del suo periodo di massimo splendore - non si addiceva alla narrativa preconcetta del settore. Certi personaggi erano intenti a rendere Jackson 'l'ex Re del Pop'. Quando Earls Court è impazzita per lui come avrebbe fatto 20 anni prima, la cosa non si adattava, per cui hanno semplicemente ignorato quello scomodo volgersi degli eventi ed hanno fatto apparire un 'coro di fischi' dal nulla. Se Jackson non avesse interpretato il suo ruolo da 'ex Re del Pop' diligentemente, avrebbero tentato di produrlo. Era il classico gonfiare i muscoli da tabloid britannico.
La frustrazione e la tristezza che ho provato quel giorno, quando ho osservato questa menzogna volutamente spacciata, e l'impotenza che sentivo guardando un presentatore televisivo dopo l'altro, un comico dopo l'altro riciclare quell'assurdità ad uso e consumo di milioni di persone che non erano lì e non avrebbero mai saputo che era tutto inventato, mi ribolle il sangue ogni volta che mi ricordo quella debacle. E' stata una brutta giornata per il giornalismo, ma la professione ne ha avuto molte altre riguardanti Michael Jackson.
Non so perché non ho mai scritto niente prima, ma un amico ha pubblicato un video della manifestazione su Facebook oggi per celebrare l'anniversario. E' stata l'ultima volta che ho visto Michael Jackson esibirsi dal vivo, ma la memoria è sempre venata di tristezza e frustrazione per quanto accaduto nei giorni successivi. E' ora che qualcuno faccia chiarezza su questa particolare falsità.

Ho avuto l'indubbio onore di essere uno dei primi a scrivere una recensione online, sull'ormai famigerato album 'Michael'. L'onore è, come ho detto, aperto al dubbio, ma le ripercussioni di questo articolo hanno causato in me un orgoglio personale, essendo come è stato, fonte di ispirazione per le persone dietro la campagna Kickstarter A truth Untold:

La recensione era esattamente come ci si aspetterebbe fosse, quella fatta da un fan irriducibile di Michael Jackson : il più obbiettiva possibile (anche se con il senno di poi, forse troppo servile rispetto all'adorazione personale verso alcune delle canzoni - ero emozionato, ok?), E , naturalmente , mettendo l'accento sulle false canzoni dei Cascio definite come quel tentativo di frode che sono e che a causa di questo hanno subìto quella giusta critica che ha finito per annientarle completamente, nella speranza che vengano ritenute il più possibile lontane da quello che è stato il lavoro artistico di Michael Jackson, preferibilmente,vederle scomparire dalla faccia del pianeta.
La spiegazione ufficiale al momento era che la voce non suonava come Michael Jackson, perché , aveva registrato le tracce del canto da dentro un tubo o in piedi dentro la doccia - no, questa non è ironia, questa è stata la spiegazione ufficiale, che alcuni fan hanno scelto di accettare - e così ho suggerito, con un pizzico di buon senso, che era difficile Michael avesse adottato un metodo simile, in quanto, "avrebbe ridotto notevolmente, le performance di una delle voci più uniche e particolari di tutti i tempi, una voce corposa ed esercitata a questo fin dall'infanzia, facendola somigliare alla voce di un ubriaco,una sorta di parodia( di se stesso),o a quella di uno spastico( distorto) agguerrito Karaoke ".
D'altra parte, un critico musicale, approvato dall'Estate ha descritto i brani come "un indubbio genuino esperimento, delle sessioni di registrazione di Dangerous e HIStory". Sto prafrasando, ma si capisce il punto.
Come parte della mia recensione, citai un vecchio gioco, che si chiama You Bet( n.d.r Scommettiamo), nel quale persone del pubblico sono i concorrenti che cercano di dimostrare i loro talenti esoterici. L'uomo che dopo meno di un secondo di ascolto ha dichiarato quelle canzoni come originali di Michael Jackson , ha fatto un impresa simile. Scherzando, ma nemmeno più di tanto, feci notare nella mia recensione, a sostegno della mia credibilità come esperto nella voce di Michael Jackson, che avevo ritenuto il concorrente un pò lento nella reattività.
Il punto è, non cercare di ingannare i fan di Michael Jackson. Noi siamo un esercito. Non potrete che ottenere un effetto negativo.
Su Vanity Fair è in corso un sondaggio dal titolo " Cover of the Century' poll ( www.vanityfair.com/100-years-of-vanity-fair/covers )
Robert Pattinson , di recente fama grazie a Twilight, aveva iniziato ad avvantaggiarsi all'inizio di una gara, un pò sospetta, acquisendo circa 45.000 voti. Nonostante questo, una campagna propagandistica del gruppo The Voice As One, tra gli altri, ha iniziato a promuovere il sondaggio, facendo immediatamente la differenza. Ce l'abbiamo fatta. E poi, stranamente, non appena Michael era in testa, è diventato impossibile da votare, mentre voti per Pattinson continuavano ad essere accettati. Michael ha sempre detto che era la sua elevatura( o fama) a renderlo un bersaglio facile . Questo modo di fare , continua tutt'ora, naturalmente. Non lo lasceranno mai riposare in pace, e questo è il motivo per cui la community è così importante. Ha salvato la nostra infanzia, ed è nostro dovere proteggerlo e difenderlo nella sua morte.
Michael si è preso il peso della sua statura( elevatura sociale, fama) che gli sono arrivate addosso, per il fatto di essere l'uomo più famoso del mondo, con canzoni come Black or White e Heal the World, come canali per trasmettere il suo messaggio di pace. Come un uomo spirituale, Michael ha utilizzato la malattia della vitiligine, ha intepretato la sofferenza come un esigenza divina per fargli attraversare i confini dell'etnia e diffondere la sua parola ad un pubblico più vasto. Se ha sofferto per il bullismo che questo ha provocato, Michael ha reagito alimentando le differenze - i calzini bianchi, i capelli, la sua associazione per i bambini, la statua creata per l'album HIStory. Il suo mistero ha costantemente creato preconcetti, distorto percezioni, ma se costretto a difendesi, è stato esplicito , "Non trattatemi come un criminale, perché non lo sono." Ha avuto il coraggio di accettarsi , per ciò che sembrava - la sua pelle translucida era come il marchio della trascendenza nella sua leggenda.

E 'a queste persone che dedica l'ironia intrinseca legata alla parola " successo". Il Successo, purtroppo, porta il proprio bagaglio. Ma quello non era altro che il modo con cui Michael cercava di controllare la sua rabbia sul palco, pur rimanendo professionale; evitando di manifestarsi dicendo a tutti direttamente che ne aveva avuto abbastanza.
Le brave persone che lavorano duramente hanno il diritto di raggiungere il loro potenziale, senza dover fare i conti con le forze che negative del cinismo e del pessimismo. Almeno, questo è, nel mondo di Michael.

Vengo a volte castigato per la mia militanza nel voler parlare del fiasco Cascio e la successiva presa di posizione anti-Estate. Il fatto stesso di aver avuto l'ardire di tentare di replicare la voce di Michael usando un impostore mi stupisce letteralmente. Ma mi piacerebbe pensare o anche solo ribadire alla mia anima, la personale convinzione come descritta dal Gruppo Voice As One: che la nostra comunità è una famiglia, ed è lì che abbiamo la forza. Siamo i fan di Michael Jackson, e vogliamo che il mondo veda Michael Jackson come realmente è. Siamo milioni . E noi siamo qui per cambiare il mondo.
Ma sappiamo tutti come a volte vanno le cose nelle famiglie. -

La Campagna Kickstarter " A Truth Untold" di cosa si tratta e perchè è importante

Circa una settimana fa, è passato il terzo anniversario della presentazione online di "Breaking News". La canzone è stata presentata al michaeljackson.com l' 8 novembre 2010 per gentile concessione della Epic Records come anticipazione per l'uscita del primo album postumo di Michael Jackson, 'Michael', rilasciato poi ,cinque settimane più tardi . La data ha segnato quindi anche il lancio della nuova campagna Kickstarter 'A Truth Untold ', che mette in discussione l'autenticità della parte vocale di "Breaking News", così come di altre due canzoni, "Keep Your Head Up" e "Monster", apparse anch'esse nell'album 'Michael' .
Per spiegarvi di cosa si tratta, e per capire perché è così importante per così tante persone, cerchiamo di tornare un pò indietro nel tempo al 7 novembre 2010. In quel giorno, i fans di Michael Jackson, me compreso, stavano in attesa. Più o meno intorno alla mezzanotte, eravamo tutti ansiosi di ascoltare finalmente del nuovo materiale, di cui (a parte il "This Is It" nel 2009) non si aveva notizia da anni,. Per un paio di giorni era stato mandato in onda un piccolo frammento, di circa 20 secondi di lunghezza, disponibile online tanto per stuzzicare l'appetito. La musica suonava bene, ma si interrompeva proprio e appena prima che la parte vocale iniziasse , di per se un ottimo modo per incuriosire Un teaser di un teaser. Questo doveva essere DAVVERO un momento speciale. Questo era come il ritorno Musicale vero e proprio di Michael. Il Re del Pop stava per tornare di nuovo, in un certo senso, GRANDE!
Nelle settimane che precedettero l'uscita di "Breaking News" , iniziarono a circolare delle voci ,che i membri della famiglia Jackson, e uno dei due co-esecutori della Michael Jackson Estate, avevano sostenuto che la voce solista di un certo numero di tracce prese in considerazione per l'album, erano false. In altre parole, credevano che fosse un altra persona a cantare e non Michael Jackson . I brani in questione erano quelli conosciuti ora come le "tracce" Cascio - fornite alla Sony tramite un amico di Michael Jackson, Eddie Cascio, e il suo partner collaborativo, James Porte. "Breaking News" è uno dei brani Cascio.
La maggior parte dei fan, me compreso, non avevano dato a queste voci, molta attenzione. Personalmente, non ero affatto preoccupato del fatto che la voce potesse essere falsa. Ero sicuro che la musica avrebbe preso campo, e spazzato via ogni dubbio, quando "Breaking News" si sarebbe sentita completamente..
Perché l'evento era davvero monumentale per me , in qualità di fans.. ho smesso di lavorare 4 ore prima per essere sicuro che non sarei mancato alla premier. Dovevo essere a casa, davanti al mio computer, con le mie cuffie e senza distrazioni, per poter ascoltare la canzone insieme ai fan di tutto il mondo. Le emozioni si rincorrevano crescendo sempre di più.
"Ho voglia di piangere", aveva scritto un fan su un sito molto popolare. "Oh mio Dio, riesco a malapena a respirare. Giuro che il mio cuore batte sempre più veloce di minuto in minuto. Finirò per esplodere ", esclamava un altro "Questo è così... oh mio dio. Io sono ... wow ... in preda alle emozioni ", aggiungeva un altro ancora.
L'idea di un "teaser" è sostanzialmente quella di alimentare l'entusiasmo dei fans per ciò che ancora deve arrivare. Se Sony aveva scelto questa canzone in particolare, come anticipazione dell'album, sopratutto pensando al primo album di materiale inedito di Michael Jackson dopo anni, ho pensato che non potesse che essere un enorme successo. E questo avrebbe chiuso la bocca degli scettici una volta per tutte.
Ma non fu così. Infatti, le cose peggiorarono, molto molto peggio.
Nel momento in cui l'orologio scoccò la mezzanotte a New York e "Breaking News" venne rilasciata, i forum di fans esplosero di critiche.. Pagine e pagine di commenti in rapida successione. Era difficile tenere il passo! I fan scrivevano freneticamente chiedendosi che cosa stesse succedendo. L'unica altra volta che avevo visto un tale caos sui siti dei fan era stato il giorno in cui Michael era morto.
"Io non so nemmeno cosa dire. Questo non è Michael ", dichiarava un fan dopo aver sentito la canzone. "E' un falso ragazzi Si tratta di una trovata pubblicitaria! "Ipotizzava un altro. "Questa non è la voce di Michael ... Mi sento frustrato e vuoto dentro ... ma Sony pensa che siamo stupidi!"
"Questo non è Michael. Cos'è uno scherzo di cattivo gusto? "Chiedeva un altro ancora "Sono sconvolto! Non è Michael! Ti odio Sony! "urlava un altro. "Questo non è Michael Jackson. Non in un milione di f.... anni ", gli faceva eco un altro fan. "Il fatto che Sony abbia fatto questo , dimostra quanto poco si preoccupano per la sua eredità. E 'un falso totale , sono f..... indignato ", continuavano.
Devo far notare che non ogni fan ha recepito negativamente la canzone. Alcuni erano felici di ascoltare la musica, e credevano che fosse Michael. Altri non ne erano sicuri e rimanevano sul bordo della questione in attesa di una qualunque dichiarazione o spiegazione dall'Estate , o Sony, o Eddie Cascio e James Porte. Ma la maggior parte dei commenti suggerivano che i fan, come la famiglia Jackson, erano in disaccordo su questo fiasco preannunciato. Indipendentemente dal fatto che la voce fosse di Michael o no, la canzone aveva creato una tale atmosfera malsana nella comunità dei fan che l'unica cosa sensata da fare, a mio parere, era quella di escluderla completamente dall'album. Se migliaia di fan avevano così mal percepito quella canzone, come si poteva andare avanti a prescindere?
Poco dopo il debutto controverso di "Breaking News", una serie di altri brani Cascio trapelarono online, tra cui "Keep Your Head Up", "Monster" e due che rimangono (ufficialmente) inediti fino ad oggi, "Stay" e "All I Need ". La reazione a questi brani fu la stessa che verso "Breaking News", con divisioni fra i fan, dibattiti e domande sul fatto che fossero autentiche o meno.
E così eccoci qui, tre anni dopo, ancora a discutere sull'autenticità dei brani Cascio. Il problema è diventato quasi un tabù nella comunità di fan di Michael Jackson, ma riesce ancora a far capolino qua e la. Ma si parla sempre delle stesse informazioni riciclate più e più volte nel tentativo di dimostrare una tesi. Ma che cosa stiamo realmente dimostrando? Qual'è il fine? Quale sarà la risoluzione?
La squadra A Truth Untold, di cui sono membro co-fondatore, ritiene che l'unica sia trovare delle risposte, e che solo con chiare risposte avremmo la soluzione. Le risposte alle domande che dopo tre anni di speculazioni, di argomentazioni e battibecchi, restano senza chiarezza. Ecco, questo è quello che stiamo facendo! Porre domande e cercare risposte.

Come cliente, o "sostenitore", trovo che essere direttamente collegato ad una campagna, della quale voglio il prodotto che stanno offrendo, impegnandomi a promuoverlo e sostenerlo per far si che il prodotto nasca, sia un processo davvero entusiasmante .
Dal punto di vista di un creatore; Kickstarter ci permette di annunciare la nostra visione per un prodotto proposto - in questo caso un libro-inchiesta - prima di investire nello stesso per il pubblico di massa. Prima di lanciare una campagna Kickstarter devi scegliere un obiettivo di finanziamento. . Una volta che la campagna diventa pubblica, tutto il successo si basa su quanto i sostenitori credono fortemente in ciò che stai proponendo.
Nel nostro caso, come detto in precedenza in questo articolo, stiamo offrendo un libro che descrive la controversia che ha circondato il primo album postumo di inediti di Michael Jackson . Il libro dedicherà particolare attenzione alle origini, la storia e l'autenticità dei brani Cascio, oltre a dettagliare gli ultimi tre anni in studio di registrazione di Michael. I felt compelled to write this blog today because as I sit here in front of my computer, it is seven years - to the day - since I experienced an epiphany of sorts about the media's coverage of Michael Jackson. I had followed his trial quite carefully, of course, comparing court transcripts to media coverage and being distressed by the horrendously biased reporting. But those reports were often rooted in fact. Journalists would simply misrepresent testimony or, in most cases, simply 'lie' by omission.
What happened seven years ago was different. I witnessed firsthand the construction of a purely fabricated story; one which shot around the world, once again making Michael Jackson a global figure of ridicule, and became immediately accepted as 'fact'. To this day, I read occasional press reports which mention this fabricated event as though it were an objective truth. It has even been listed as a significant career event in Jackson biographies.
Witnessing the creation of the myth was an experience that has stayed with me ever since. For an enthusiastic journalism degree student, it was a shocking and saddening insight into the media's more sinister machinations.
On November 15, 2006, Michael Jackson appeared at the World Music Awards in London's Earls Court Arena. It was his first official appearance in the capital since his acquittal in June 2005 and was fortunate enough to be there. Some fans queued all day to secure prime positions in front of the stage but I had to go to university and then travel into London in the evening. Nonetheless, my friends and I easily claimed a spot against the front barrier, just off to the side, immediately beside the mixing deck. We spent part of the evening chatting to the sound and security staff, who tipped us off that they'd been in rehearsals and heard Jackson rehearsing 'that save the world song'. We even met Katie Melua.
It seemed like everybody was there for Michael Jackson. At any gap in the ceremony, chants of his name would erupt around the arena. Other performers on the bill included Enya, Beyoncé and Andrea Bocelli, but they mostly received tepid responses and their performances were often book-ended by increasingly loud chants of 'Michael! Michael! Michael!'
The night was plagued by delays. Lindsay Lohan, on hosting duty, fluffed almost every line she had and had to record all of her links multiple times. The turnaround between acts was slow. At one point there was a half hour or more of just nothing at all: an empty stage.
When Michael Jackson eventually appeared, to collect a Diamond Award for album sales over 100million, the place exploded. I have seen Paul McCartney. I have seen Madonna. I have seen Prince. I have seen George Michael. I have never in my life, before or since, witnessed any artist provoke the response that Michael Jackson provoked that night. He received the most sustained, thunderous reception I've ever seen.
He remained on stage for several minutes to deliver two short acceptance speeches - one for his Diamond Award and one for a Guinness World Record presentation. For the duration of his speeches, I hardly heard a word he said, despite the booming sound system. Most artists receive a big cheer as they walk onstage, then the audience settles down. Michael Jackson provoked hysteria. Shrieking and crying. It didn't lull once from the moment he appeared on that balcony until the moment he disappeared backstage again. It was an unforgettable sight.
He emerged again later for a brief performance of sorts. He walked onstage to another cacophonous reception as his record-breaking humanitarian single We Are The World played over the speaker system. He sang a few lines and seemed to look pleadingly towards the mixing desk. My suspicion is that the fans were making such a din he couldn't hear himself. It was like one of his concerts from the 80s. I saw bodies pulled from the crowd and rushed away in wheelchairs.
A few minutes later the sound people bizarrely turned the track off just as he started singing again. No matter. The place just went even crazier. It was an emotional moment, watching him receive such a rapturous welcome after the previous summer's events. After standing for a while on the runway that jutted out from the stage into the crowd, he began to exit, but as the cheering swelled - the audience not wanting to let him go so quickly - he stopped and turned around. Playfully, he lifted a finger to his lips as if to ask the question, 'Shall I stay or shall I go?' The shrieking intensified.
He stood for a while, smiling, and just soaking in the adulation, then raised his fist into a triumphant black power salute. With that, he turned and coolly strolled off-stage, the applause continuing fiercely as he disappeared from view. I have never seen a human being cause such chaos. It was deafening.

GOSSIP: Conrad Murray plans to make film revealing MJ's last secrets
London, Nov 16 : Doctor Conrad Murray, who was held responsible for Michael Jackson's wrongful death in 2009, is looking towards making a film in order to reveal the late singer's final secrets.
Murray wants Oscar-winning actor Denzel Washington to star as the King of Pop, the Daily Star reported.
However, Jackson's family are reportedly outraged at his plans to cash in on the singer's memory.
A source told the publication that this is a "disgusting ploy by shameless Murray to trade off his despicable actions." (ANI)

E sono pienamente daccordo, se la corte dovesse ritenere che in effetti il giudice ha commesso questo errore, beh, processo annullato.. si riparte.. e credo che puntino a questo .. sembrano sciocchezze.. ma sapete gli appelli diretti raramente portano ad un giudizio differente, spesso vengono respinti.. statisticamente sono pochissimi i casi di appello andati in porto.. se invece il processo viene annullato per difetto è diverso.. -

The ‘A Truth Untold’ Kickstarter campaign; What it’s about and why it’s important!

One week ago today marked the three-year anniversary of the online premier of “Breaking News”. The song was unveiled at michaeljackson.com on November 8, 2010 courtesy of Epic Records as a teaser for the first posthumous Michael Jackson album, ‘Michael’, to be released five weeks later. The date also marked the launch of ‘A Truth Untold’, a new Kickstarter campaign that calls into question the authenticity of the vocals on “Breaking News”, as well as two other songs, “Keep Your Head Up” and “Monster”, which also appear on the ‘Michael’ album.
In order to explain what the A Truth Untold Kickstarter is about, and to understand why it is so important to so many people, let’s backtrack to November 7, 2010. On that day, Michael Jackson fans around the world, myself included, were on the edge of their seats. At the turn of midnight the first brand new, unreleased Michael Jackson song fans had heard in many years (aside from “This Is It” in 2009) would officially be debuted. For a few days prior to the debut a snippet, roughly 20 seconds in length, was available online to whet our appetite. The music sounded good, but it cut out right before the vocals kicked in. What a great way to build suspense. A teaser of a teaser. This was to going be a special moment. This was Michael’s time to shine. The King of Pop was about to be back, in a BIG way!
In the weeks leading up to the premier of “Breaking News” rumours began circulating in the media that members of the Jackson family, and one of the two co-executors of The Michael Jackson Estate, had claimed that the lead vocals on a number of the tracks being considered for the album were fake. In other words, they believed that someone other than Michael Jackson was singing. The tracks in question were those now known as the “Cascio tracks” – provided to Sony by Michael Jackson’s friend, Eddie Cascio, and his collaborative partner, James Porte. “Breaking News” is one of the Cascio tracks.
Most fans, including me, didn’t give the rumours much attention. Personally, I was not at all concerned that the vocals would be fake. “That’s just crazy,” I thought. “As if Sony would release a fake song!” If anything, it was annoying to me that the Jacksons were raining on our parade. Like I said, this was supposed to be Michael’s moment to shine! Michael Jackson has one of the most recognisable, inimitable voices ever. I was confident that the music would speak for itself, and that all doubt would be set aside when “Breaking News” arrived online in full.
Because the occasion was monumental for me, as a fan, I left work four hours early to ensure I did not miss the premier. I had to be at home, in front of my computer, with my headphones on and no distractions, to experience the song simultaneously with fellow fans around the world. Emotions were running high as the moment drew closer and closer.
“I want to cry,” said one fan on a popular fan site. “Oh my God, I can barely breathe. I swear my heart is beating faster by the minute. I might blow up or something,” exclaimed another. “This is just… oh my gosh. I am… wow… every emotion,” added someone else.
The idea of a “teaser” is to get fans excited for what is still to come. If this Sony had chosen this particular song as our very first taste of the album, with all those rumours of “fake” vocals swirling and especially knowing how much amazing, legitimate, unreleased material Michael Jackson had recorded during his life, I assumed it had to be a hit. This would shut the naysayers up once and for all.
But it didn’t. In fact, it made things worse. Much worse.
The moment the clock struck midnight in New York and “Breaking News” was unleashed, fan forums exploded with rapid-fire criticism over the track. Pages and pages of comments in quick succession. It was hard to keep up! The fans were frantic, wondering what was going on. The only other time I’d seen such chaos on the fan sites was the day Michael had passed away.
“I don’t even know what to say. This is NOT Michael,” stated a fan in reaction to hearing the song. “We are being played guys! This is a pr STUNT!” speculated another. “This is not Michael’s voice… I feel frustrated and empty… Sony thinks we are stupid!”
“That’s NOT Michael. Is this [some] kind of sick joke?” someone asked. “I’M SO UPSET! That song is NOT Michael! I hate you Sony!” ranted someone else. “That is not Michael Jackson. Not in a million f*cking years,” echoed yet another fan. “The fact that Sony have done this goes to show how little they care for his legacy. It’s a complete f*cking outrage,” they continued.
It should be noted that not every fan reacted negatively. Some fans did enjoy the track, and believed it was Michael. Others weren’t sure and decided to remain on the fence until there was a statement or explanation from either the Estate, Sony, or Eddie Cascio and James Porte. But the majority of feedback suggested that fans, along with the Jackson family, wouldn’t stand for this kind of fiasco. Regardless of whether they were Michael’s authentic vocals or not, the song had created such a toxic atmosphere in the fan community that it seemed the only sensible thing, in my opinion, was to exclude it from the album completely. If fans thousands of fans around the world were rejecting it, what would be the point in moving forward with it?
Soon after the controversial debut of “Breaking News” a number of other Cascio tracks leaked online, including “Keep Your Head Up”, “Monster” and two that remain (officially) unreleased to this day; “Stay” and “All I Need”. The reaction to these was the same as the reaction to “Breaking News”, with a divide, debate and questions in the fan community over whether they were authentic or not.
And so here we are, three years later, still discussing the authenticity of the Cascio tracks. The issue has almost become taboo in the Michael Jackson fan community, but it still manages to creep its way into almost every discussion topic. It’s the same old blend of information and opinion being recycled over and over again in an attempt to prove a point. But what are we really proving? Where does this all end? What will be the resolution?
The A Truth Untold team, of which I am a co-founding member, believes that it all ends with answers, and that answers will be part of the resolution. Answers to the questions that after three years of speculation, arguments and bickering, remain unanswered. So that’s what we are doing! Asking questions and seeking answers.
So where does Kickstarter come into this?
For the past three years the A Truth Untold team; James, Dan, Ashley and myself, have been diligently researching the origins and authenticity of the Cascio tracks as part of an investigative piece that also documents Michael Jackson’s last three years in the recording studio, and the controversy that surrounded the posthumous ‘Michael’ album.
We’ve taken our quest for the truth to Kickstarter in a bid to raise the $40,000 we require to complete the research and publish the extensive findings of that research as an exclusive tell-all book detailing the shocking true story of what really happened.
“Michael’s fans are extraordinary in their quest for accuracy and their passions to raise their voices in a search for truth! We join with them in our care and concern for Michael,” said attorney for the Estate Of Michael Jackson, Howard Weitzman, in direct response to the questions surrounding the Cascio tracks.
“We take all fan comments very seriously,” Weitzman said in the same statement, adding that, “there is nothing more important to the Estate than Michael’s music, his legacy and his fans.”
And so we ask The Estate, as well as Sony Music, Eddie Cascio, James Porte, Teddy Riley, the Jackson family and anyone else associated with this controversy to open the lines of communication with us. We, Michael’s fans, are here, raising our voice in a search for the truth to get to the bottom of this issue. Please, tell us your side of the story and allow us to document it. Once everyone has told their side of the story, and answered our questions, we will assess all the information, including what we’ve already discovered over the course of our three-year investigation, and put all the pieces of the puzzle together in the form of a book. This is part of the Michael Jackson story now, so it’s important that we get the story straight. For Michael!
To put all the posthumous controversy into context, the book will also detail Michael Jackson’s final three years in the recording studio, sharing captivating and heart-warming recollections from many of his collaborators from during that period. The reader will be introduced to the genius and perfectionism of the greatest recording artist of all time, and will be left with an overwhelming appreciation for his dedication to his craft.

If we successfully reach the $40,000 mark by the date our campaign ends (Dec 14), we will be considered “funded” and will receive payment from Kickstarter, minus 10% in fees which are paid straight back to Kickstarter and Amazon for the privilege of them hosting our campaign. If we do not raise our $40,000 funding goal we are considered “unfunded.” In that case, the pledges people made when pre-ordering the book are not charged to their credit card, and we received no payment at all.
The crowd-funding method of launching a product is something I truly believe in. I have personally supported a number of different crowd-funded campaigns over a variety of crowd-funding platforms including Kickstarter, Indiegogo and Pozible. As a customer, or “backer” as they’re called, I find that connecting with a campaign, wanting the product they’re offering, pledging for it and then promoting and supporting it to bring that product to fruition really is an exciting process.
From a creator’s point of view; Kickstarter allows us to announce our vision for a proposed product – in this case an investigative book - before laying down the funds for mass production. Before launching a Kickstarter campaign you have to pick a funding goal. This is typically the amount of money you require to complete the blueprint for your item/s and put it/them into production. Once your campaign goes public, your success hinges on how strongly your supporters and the public believe in what you are offering.
In our case, as stated earlier in the article, we are offering a book detailing the controversy that surrounded the first posthumous album of unreleased Michael Jackson music. The book will dedicate specific focus to the origins, history and authenticity of the Cascio tracks, as well as detailing Michael’s final three years of recording music. If enough people want this book and make a pledge, it will happen! But we’ve only got a month to do it!
We need to generate at least $40,000 from the rewards we are offering in order to successfully follow through on our mission. That’s why if we raise less than $40,000 we get nothing. Kickstarter does not give creators your money if the creator cannot afford to produce the item the backer has pledged for. It’s all or nothing and I think that’s a fair deal.
Why do we require $40,000?
Because in order for us to complete this project the way we envision, that’s how much it’ll cost. We are offering two different physical versions of the book – a softcover version and a hardcover version. Print production and distribution costs must be accounted for as we endeavour to deliver these items. As this is an investigative piece, first-hand research and expenses related to the investigation, including international travel will be accounted for. We also intend to engage the services of a professional Forensic Musicologist, whose analysis we would like to feature in the book. That’s an expensive process but worth every penny. Licensing fees must be accounted for if we are to publish exclusive and relevant photography in the book. Because of the elevated risks associated with investigative works, and the legalities associated with a crowd-funded campaign of this nature, we needed to retain legal representation. This will be covered by our budget, as well as the Kickstarter and Amazon Payments commission obligations that come part and parcel with every single Kickstarter campaign.

With Great Power

I had the dubious honour of being one of the first to write an online magazine review of the now infamous ‘Michael’ album. The honour is, as I say, open to dubiosity, but the repercussions of the article are cause for a great deal of personal pride, being as it was, an inspiration for the people behind the A Truth Untold Kickstarter campaign:

The review was as one would expect from a diehard Michael Jackson fan: I was as objective as possible (though with hindsight, perhaps too fawning over a couple of the songs – look, I was excited, alright?), and I, of course, exposed the fake Cascio tracks as the fraudulent activity they were, and hence they received their justly-deserved critical complete annihilation, with an accompanying demand that they be immediately scrubbed off the canon that is Michael Jackson’s life-work, and preferably, off the face of the planet.
The official explanation at the time was that the voice didn’t sound like Michael Jackson because he had recorded the tracks singing through a pipe whilst standing in the shower – no, this is not satire, this was the official explanation, which some fans chose to accept – and so I suggested, tongue-in-cheek, that Michael should have maybe not employed this method, as, “it makes him sound much less like he had one of the richest and most soulful singing voices of all time, a voice nurtured and trained since childhood, and more like he’s doing spontaneous, drunken, self-parodying, angry spastic karaoke.”
On the other hand, Estate-pal Joe Vogel, described the tracks as sounding like, “indubitably genuine and orgasmic out-takes from the Dangerous and HIStory sessions”. I paraphrase; but you get the picture.
As part of my review, I mentioned an old game show called You Bet, in which members of the public came on and undertook specific skills to showcase their esoteric talents. One such undertaking was a man who had to name Michael Jackson songs after hearing less than a second of the music. I half-jokingly noted in the review, in support of my credibility as an expert on Michael Jackson’s voice, that I remembered considering the contestant to be quite slow.
The point is, don’t try to deceive Michael Jackson fans. We are an army, and you will fail. In the ongoing Vanity Fair ‘Cover of the Century’ poll ( www.vanityfair.com/100-years-of-vanity-fair/covers )
, Robert Pattinson of Twilight fame had started proceedings with a somewhat suspicious forty-thousand lead head start. Nevertheless, and never ones to relinquish a challenge, the Voice As One campaign group, amongst others, proceeded to promote the poll and make up the difference in votes. We did it. And then, strangely enough, as soon as Michael was in the lead, he became impossible to vote for, whereas Pattinson’s votes continued to be accepted. Let’s hope, for their sakes, Vanity Fair take heed of our ongoing protests and complaints, and manage to quickly rectify this apparent glitch.
(In the meantime, one Voice As One member appears to have found a way of overcoming the voting difficulty: “Go to the page, click ‘vote’ as normal.

Michael always said it was his stature that made him such an easy target for the sheer volume and size of rocks that were thrown at him. This continues, of course. They will never let him rest in peace, which is why the fan community is so important. He rescued so many of our childhoods, and it’s our duty to protect and defend him in his death.
Michael fully assumed this stature and the associated responsibilities that come with being the most famous man in the world; using songs such as Black Or White and Heal The World as conduits to convey his message of peace. As a spiritual man, Michael used the onset of vitiligo to his advantage, he took it as an instruction from the divine that he must traverse ethnicity and spread his ethos to a wider audience. If bullied or undermined, Michael reacted by making things bigger and more obvious – the white socks, the hair, the association with children, the HIStory statue. His mystery constantly tested perceptions and preconceptions, but when forced to be, he was explicit in his own defence, “Don’t treat me like a criminal, because I am not.” He dared you to accept him, whatever he looked like – the exponential translucency of his skin eventually assisting his transcendence into legend. Yet he left a most concrete and real legacy of goodwill behind him, as evidenced by the Liberia Everland Children’s Home project (www.michaeljacksonslegacy.org). It is projects like these that make me most proud to be a Michael Jackson fan.
Michael understood jealousy as the root of all evil; that there is a plethora of truly sad and ruthless people in existence, who simply cannot stand to see success for other people, and will do anything to bring them down. It is these people that lend the inherent irony to the word ‘success’. Success, sadly, brings its own baggage. The man experienced so much vitriol and underhanded attempts to bring him down, after all his attempts to help heal the world, so who can deny him outbursts of rage such as the Ghosts film? Yet, even this was a studied anger. People have been singing the praises of the recently leaked Buenos Aires Dangerous concert, due to it being atypical; but am I the only one to see that that was an extraordinarily angry man on stage? A man, dealing with child molestation allegations behind the scenes, allegations specifically tailored to cut him to the core, a man who was having to take extended breaks between songs, even exiting the stage during some songs, in order to take oxygen? But that was as close as Michael could get to expressing rage on stage, whilst remaining professional; without basically getting up there and telling everyone he really had had enough. Good people that work hard are entitled to achieve their potential, without having to contend with the negating forces of lazy cynicism and pessimism. At least, that is, in Michael’s world.
The mission statement of the Voice As One campaign group (www.facebook.com/groups/voiceasone) is this:
“Our group was created to quickly organise and rally Michael Jackson fans for protest in the all-too prevalent occurrences of defamatory media against him. We are united in our stance against the slander of Michael Jackson, and in our steadfast belief in his innocence and intention to help heal the world; this unity disregards any other differences the Michael Jackson fan family may have, so feel free to have an opinion and discuss.”
I get chastised sometimes for my militant take on the Cascio fiasco and subsequent anti-Estate stance. It is something I am vehemently passionate about, and at times enrages me, as I see that whole debacle as a distillation of the attempted undermining of Michael’s legacy. The fact that they had the audacity to attempt to replicate Michael’s voice using an imposter simply dumbfounds me. But I’d also just like to reiterate that at my core, my personal belief is as outlined in the Voice As One mission statement above: that our community is a family, and that’s where we have strength. We are Michael Jackson fans, and we want the world as Michael Jackson saw it. There are millions of us. And we are here to change the world.
But we all know what families are like.
