A stitch in time for Michael Jackson By DAYLE LATHAM May 28, 2014, 6:30 a.m.  A CHANCE meeting and a few posts on Facebook led to an opportunity for a former Sanctuary Point man to be a part of the posthumous launch of Michael Jackson’s latest album.
TAFE fashion design student Ricky Milne, 26, and fellow theatre student Robert Manzini, 27, from Wollongong secured their first significant industry gig when they were asked to recreate a CGI jacket worn by MJ on the cover of his latest album, Xscape.
The pair sewed the jacket in two weeks so it could be worn by the Michael Jackson wax figurine at Madame Tussauds in Sydney for the day of the launch on Tuesday, May 16.
The opportunity arose when a Sony Music Australia employee, who had seen some of Ricky’s design work on Facebook, asked if he and Robert would be able to make a costume in two weeks.
“I said, ‘Yeah, it depends what it is,’” Ricky said.
“When she went into detail, I was like – we won’t sleep, we will do it.”
There was time for two fittings – the jacket was too baggy the first time and still slightly too big the second.
“At the final fitting night before the event, there I am my heart racing, thinking if this doesn’t fit – but it fit perfectly,” Ricky said.
Xscape came about when the Jackson family discovered old music and archives for this album with a computer generated image.
The image only showed the jacket from the shoulder up.
Robert designed the lower half of the jacket, in keeping with the military style Jackson often wore.
“I had his old hits in primary school,” Ricky said.
“So when we were making the jacket we had the greatest hits going.
“I didn’t really realise when I was younger how powerful his voice and messages were.”
Ricky and Robert were thrilled to hear Sony had been sending updates on the jacket to the marketing manager of the Jackson estate in the US.
“He loved it, which is – wow – and I’m guessing the Jackson family has seen it by now,” Ricky said.
“It’s surreal.”
The jacket remained on the wax figure for the day of the launch and has now been returned to Sony, where it will be displayed.
Ricky was born in Shellharbour and moved to Sanctuary Point, where he attended primary school.
He attended Vincentia High School until year 9 and then finished year 10 at Shoalhaven High School.
“After I finished I embarked on travelling and all sorts of things. I just wanted to get out and go backpacking. I ended up living in Sydney, then Melbourne and now Wollongong,” he said.
While he had work in call centres and the like to pay the bills, he took on jobs in theatre on the side, doing makeup.
Last year he decided to pursue sewing and completed a certificate two in fashion design.
He’s now halfway through his certificate four.
Ricky met Robert, who was performing and doing set design on Cats last year.
“He asked me to do the makeup,” Ricky said.
The two discovered their creative talents worked well together and have taken on a number of projects.
”He’s more graphic design and I’m more into makeup and we both sew.”
The two will be working on Phantom of the Opera set to open in August at the Illawarra Performing Arts Centre.
They also plan to start a business together offering graphic design, makeup artistry, hair, costume design, set design and photography.
A labour of love
RICKY Milne described the jacket he and Richard Manzini created.
“The base of the jacket consists of two layers,” he said.
“The outer layer is a stretch fabric, which has been covered with a cotton drill fabric, to give it structure.
“All of the buttons down the front and on the cuffs are made from brass.
“The epaulettes on the cuffs and shoulders are handmade by Robert and myself.
“The shoulder accents are also handmade and hand-sewn into the seam with the epaulettes and the rope features.
“The arm band is made from a different gold fabric and attached, as MJ always wore the arm band as part of his military theme.
“The collar is gold on the outside and black on the inside with clusters of rhinestones between two layers of fabric.
“The bottom layer is like a glittery fabric and the top is a mesh with hints of glitter on it.
“We had the ring on top laser cut to fit, and attached.
“The embellishments on the front are hand sewn on as tapered lines, keeping with the military theme MJ loved.”

Un incontro casuale e un paio di messaggi su Facebook ha portato ad una possibilità per un ex uomo Sanctuary Point a far parte del lancio dell'ultimo album postumo di Michael Jackson.
TAFE studente di design della moda Ricky Milne, 26, e compagno di studi di teatro Robert Manzini, 27 anni, di Wollongong assicurato il loro primo importante concerto di settore, quando è stato chiesto loro di ricreare una giacca CGI indossata da MJ sulla copertina del suo ultimo album, Xscape.
La coppia ha cucito la giacca in due settimane, in modo che possa essere indossato dalla cera figurina Michael Jackson al Madame Tussauds di Sydney per il giorno del lancio il Martedì, 16 maggio.
L'occasione si è presentata quando un dipendente di Sony Music Australia, che aveva visto alcuni dei lavori di progettazione di Ricky su Facebook, ha chiesto se lui e Robert sarebbe in grado di fare un costume in due settimane.
"Ho detto, 'Sì, dipende da quello che è,'" ha detto Ricky.
"Quando andò in particolare, ero come - noi non dormiremo, lo faremo."
C'era tempo per due raccordi - la giacca era troppo larghi per la prima volta e ancora un po 'troppo grande il secondo.
"Alla sera montaggio finale prima dell'evento, io sono il mio cuore da corsa, pensando che se questo non va bene - ma si adattano perfettamente", ha detto Ricky.
Xscape è nata quando la famiglia Jackson ha scoperto la musica antica e archivi per questo album con una immagine generato dal computer.
L'immagine mostrava solo la giacca dalla spalla in su.
Robert ha progettato la metà inferiore della giacca, in linea con lo stile militare Jackson indossava spesso.
"Ho avuto i suoi vecchi successi nella scuola primaria", ha detto Ricky.
"Così quando stavamo facendo la giacca abbiamo avuto i più grandi successi in corso.
"Non ho davvero capito quando ero più giovane quanto potente la sua voce e messaggi sono stati."
Ricky e Robert erano entusiasti di sentire Sony aveva mandato gli aggiornamenti sulla giacca per il direttore marketing della tenuta di Jackson negli Stati Uniti.
"Lui mi è piaciuto molto, che è - wow - e sto cercando di indovinare la famiglia Jackson ha visto da subito", ha detto Ricky.
"E 'surreale".
Il rivestimento è rimasto sulla figura di cera per il giorno del lancio e ora è stato restituito Sony, dove sarà visualizzato.
Ricky è nato a Shellharbour e si trasferisce a Sanctuary Point, dove ha frequentato la scuola elementare.
Ha frequentato Vincentia Liceo fino all'anno 9 e poi finito l'anno 10 in Shoalhaven High School.
"Dopo che ho finito mi sono imbarcato in viaggio e ogni sorta di cose. Volevo solo uscire e andare backpacking. Ho finito per vivere a Sydney, poi Melbourne e Wollongong ora, "ha detto.
Mentre lui era lavorare nei call center e simili per pagare le bollette, ha preso sui posti di lavoro nel teatro sul lato, facendo il trucco.
L'anno scorso ha deciso di proseguire la cucitura e completato un certificato due in fashion design.
Adesso è a metà strada attraverso il suo certificato di quattro.
Ricky ha incontrato Robert, che si esibiva e fare design impostato su Cats l'anno scorso.
"Mi ha chiesto di fare il trucco", ha detto Ricky.
I due hanno scoperto i loro talenti creativi hanno lavorato bene insieme e hanno assunto una serie di progetti.
"E 'più grafica e sono più nel trucco e siamo entrambi cucire."
I due lavoreranno sulla Phantom of the Opera che aprirà nel mese di agosto presso il Illawarra Performing Arts Centre.
Essi prevedono inoltre di avviare un business insieme che offre progettazione grafica, trucco artistico, capelli, costumi, scenografia e fotografia.
Un lavoro d'amore
RICKY Milne ha descritto la giacca di lui e Riccardo Manzini creato.
"La base della giacca è costituito da due strati," ha detto.
"Lo strato esterno è un tessuto elastico, che è stata coperta con un tessuto drill di cotone, per dare struttura.
"Tutti i bottoni sul davanti e sui polsini sono realizzati in ottone.
"Le spalline sui polsini e spalle sono realizzati a mano da Robert e da me.
"Gli accenti della spalla sono anche fatti a mano e mano-cucita nella cucitura con le spalline e le caratteristiche corda.
"La fascia da braccio è realizzato in un tessuto d'oro diverso e collegato, come MJ sempre indossato la fascia da braccio come parte del suo tema militare.
"Il collare è oro all'esterno e nero all'interno di grappoli di strass tra due strati di tessuto.
"Lo strato inferiore è come un tessuto glitterato e la parte superiore è una maglia con note di glitter su di esso.
"Abbiamo avuto l'anello in cima tagliato al laser per misura, e attaccati.
"Gli abbellimenti sul fronte sono cuciti a mano su come linee rastremate, armonia con il tema militare MJ amava". |
