New doc on Jackson's Irish taxi driver

In 2006 a Westmeath taxi driver looked in the rearview mirror only to see Michael Jackson starring back at him and a new documentary explains how the fare lasted six months.

Michael Jackson's Taxi Driver is the name of the new documentary on RTÉ Radio 1 which tells Ray O'Hara's amazing story.

"The first few days I was in shock," says O'Hara, "I kept looking in the mirror to be sure the guy in the back really was Michael Jackson."

Speaking to RTÉ TEN, the documentary producer and narrator, Ken Sweeney explained how the programme came about: "I've been a showbiz journalist for about ten years in Ireland working for a lot of papers from The Herald to The Sunday Tribune to The Irish Independent.

"One of the stories that I came across throughout my career was Michael Jackson's visit here in 2006. What sparked this documentary, Michael Jackson's Irish Driver which is on Saturday on RTÉ Radio 1, was the story that Paddy Dunning, the owner of Grouse Lodge [where Jackson and his family stayed recording music and holidaying] told me.

"He describes driving in 2006 up to Dublin with Michael Jackson in the car and they were going through Dublin and they were just about to run out of petrol.

"Michael Jackson was just about to end up pushing a car through Crumlin. The biggest superstar in the planet, who sold 750 million albums, he was going to be pushing a car through Crumlin. I heard that and said I gotta hear more about this.

"Through the co-operation of Paddy, I was introduced to Ray O'Hara, a Dublin born, Westmeath based Taxi driver and he was appointed Michael Jackson's personal driver for the six months.

Sweeney added: "Ray could not believe his luck when he was told he was going to be Jackson's driver and to also drive his family. Our documentary is a story about two men and how they went from being a celebrity and a driver to becoming friends.

"The most incredible thing about it was that Michael Jackson spent his whole life being pursued by the media but he was able to come to Ireland in 2006 and live as a typical dad, he went to bowling alleys and art galleries and shops, behaving as any dad would."

He added: "That was what he absolutely loved about Ireland. There's a story at the start of the documentary where Ray brought Michael to a bowling alley in Westmeath and Michael was in there bowling, the hat, the whole thing that you'd expect from Michael Jackson.

"A guy came in to deliver pizza and he looked over and...he said to the woman [working there]: 'Is that Michael Jackson over there?' And the woman said to him: 'No, no that's a guy from Tullamore who thinks he's Michael Jackson, we just let him go on about his business, we never question him.'

"And the delivery man said: 'Ah yeah, of course. Sure what would Michael Jackson by doing in a bowling alley in Tullamore!' So there's lots of little stories like that in the documentary.

"Even when the world's media began to descend on Westmeath, local farmers were giving them wrong directions becuase they knew he [Jackson] was having a good time with his family and they just wanted that peace to be maintained.

"He was actually thinking of moving to Ireland, Ray was going to be his personal driver but unfortunatly events went a different way so all we have is a snapshot of his life in Ireland."

Entire town conspired to hide the pop superstar documentary reveals

The new RTE radio documentary 'Michael Jackson's Irish Driver' reveals how the entire village of Moate, Co Westmeath helped to hide the world's famous pop superstar for six months.

Jackson escaped to the midlands in 2006, where he was put up by Grouse Lodge owner Paddy Dunning and had a personal chauffeur, Dubliner Ray O’Hara.

“I was told two days before hand and thought ‘no way’, there’s no one more famous, I couldn’t take it in," O'Hara says on the documentary.

“When it came to the first day you wouldn’t believe how nervous I was. I was shaking.

“He put out his hand to say hello and then after we shook, he was the same as you and me.”

No matter where the King of Pop went in the village, his whereabouts were kept secret by the townspeople.

And even when it was finally revealed he was in Moate, locals purposely gave reporters wrong directions to keep him safe.

Said Paul Lawless, owner of Egan’s pub: “What we did was we had a pre opening and Ray pulled up with the van and he came straight in.

“I showed him what we had and he had a glass of wine.

“I never asked for an autograph. My thing is they’re the same as you. People don’t hound you or don’t go after the artist. They give them their own space, it’s unusual.”

Although Jackson arrived after the child molestation charges, Paddy Dunning said he had no problem with him staying with his family.

“He came down on a bus with his family, the kids and a nanny.

“His kids were playing with my kids within hours. It was all happy families.

“He had received death threats but I think he found solace and comfort, he was living with an ordinary family.

“The whole paedophile thing but I don’t think he was one of those predators.

“I wouldn’t let him down to my house if I had any inclination that was the case.

“When I met him I got the impression this guy has been made into a monster – that’s my opinion.”

Jackson also went to a kids’ center called Jumping Jacks in Tullamore, Co Offaly. The locals there didn’t believe it was really the pop star.

“I was a bit surprised to think he would come here to pay, delighted to have him, of course," said owner Brenda Carroll.

“The first night they came, it closed so they had it to themselves but when they came bowling others were there.

“They let him bowl him away and no one looked at him, they left him be.”

The shoes Jackson played in have pride of place in the center.

Ms Carroll said: “Straight away we brought them into the office, we put them into the glass case. They’ve been there ever since.”

"I suoi ragazzi stavano giocando con i miei bambini entro le ore. E ' stato famiglie tutti felici.

"Aveva ricevuto minacce di morte ma penso che ha trovato conforto e comodità, viveva con un'ordinaria famiglia.

"La cosa intera pedofili, ma non credo che era uno di quei predatori.

"Non lo lascio giù a casa mia se avessi qualsiasi inclinazione che era il caso.

"Quando l'incontrato che ho avuto l'impressione che questo ragazzo è stato fatto in un mostro-che è un mio parere".

Jackson è andato anche al centro di un bambini chiamato Jumping Jack in Tullamore, Co Offaly. La gente del posto ci non credeva che fosse davvero la pop star.

"Sono stato un po ' sorpreso a pensare che egli sarebbe venuto qui a pagare, felice di avere lui, naturalmente," ha detto il proprietario Brenda Carroll.

"La prima notte che sono venuti, chiuso così l'avevano a loro stessi, ma quando giunsero da bowling gli altri erano lì.

"Essi fargli ciotola lui via e nessuno lo guardò, si sinistra lui essere."

Le scarpe in che Jackson ha giocato hanno posto al centro.

MS Carroll ha detto: "subito li abbiamo portati in ufficio, li abbiamo messi in una teca di vetro. Sono stati lì da allora."
