After the 20-year-old claimed that Wrecking Ball's controversial video was inspired by Nothing Compares 2 U, the Irish singer was compelled to warn Cyrus that she is being 'pimped' by the pop industry. This is the full text of O'Connor's blogpost
Dear Miley,
I wasn't going to write this letter, but today i've been dodging phone calls from various newspapers who wished me to remark upon your having said in Rolling Stone your Wrecking Ball video was designed to be similar to the one for Nothing Compares … So this is what I need to say … And it is said in the spirit of motherliness and with love.
I am extremely concerned for you that those around you have led you to believe, or encouraged you in your own belief, that it is in any way 'cool' to be naked and licking sledgehammers in your videos. It is in fact the case that you will obscure your talent by allowing yourself to be pimped, whether its the music business or yourself doing the pimping.
Nothing but harm will come in the long run, from allowing yourself to be exploited, and it is absolutely NOT in ANY way an empowerment of yourself or any other young women, for you to send across the message that you are to be valued (even by you) more for your sexual appeal than your obvious talent.
I am happy to hear I am somewhat of a role model for you and I hope that because of that you will pay close attention to what I am telling you.
The music business doesn't give a shit about you, or any of us. They will prostitute you for all you are worth, and cleverly make you think its what YOU wanted … and when you end up in rehab as a result of being prostituted, 'they' will be sunning themselves on their yachts in Antigua, which they bought by selling your body and you will find yourself very alone.
None of the men ogling you give a shit about you either, do not be fooled. Many's the woman mistook lust for love. If they want you sexually that doesn't mean they give a fuck about you. All the more true when you unwittingly give the impression you don't give much of a fuck about yourself. And when you employ people who give the impression they don't give much of a fuck about you either. No one who cares about you could support your being pimped … and that includes you yourself.
Yes, I'm suggesting you don't care for yourself. That has to change. You ought be protected as a precious young lady by anyone in your employ and anyone around you, including you. This is a dangerous world. We don't encourage our daughters to walk around naked in it because it makes them prey for animals and less than animals, a distressing majority of whom work in the music industry and it's associated media.
You are worth more than your body or your sexual appeal. The world of showbiz doesn't see things that way, they like things to be seen the other way, whether they are magazines who want you on their cover, or whatever … Don't be under any illusions … ALL of them want you because they're making money off your youth and your beauty … which they could not do except for the fact your youth makes you blind to the evils of show business. If you have an innocent heart you can't recognise those who do not.
I repeat, you have enough talent that you don't need to let the music business make a prostitute of you. You shouldn't let them make a fool of you either. Don't think for a moment that any of them give a flying fuck about you. They're there for the money… we're there for the music. It has always been that way and it will always be that way. The sooner a young lady gets to know that, the sooner she can be REALLY in control.
You also said in Rolling Stone that your look is based on mine. The look I chose, I chose on purpose at a time when my record company were encouraging me to do what you have done. I felt I would rather be judged on my talent and not my looks. I am happy that I made that choice, not least because I do not find myself on the proverbial rag heap now that I am almost 47 yrs of age … which unfortunately many female artists who have based their image around their sexuality, end up on when they reach middle age.
Real empowerment of yourself as a woman would be to in future refuse to exploit your body or your sexuality in order for men to make money from you. I needn't even ask the question … I've been in the business long enough to know that men are making more money than you are from you getting naked. Its really not at all cool. And its sending dangerous signals to other young women. Please in future say no when you are asked to prostitute yourself. Your body is for you and your boyfriend. It isn't for every spunk-spewing dirtbag on the net, or every greedy record company executive to buy his mistresses diamonds with.
As for the shedding of the Hannah Montana image … whoever is telling you getting naked is the way to do that does absolutely NOT respect your talent, or you as a young lady. Your records are good enough for you not to need any shedding of Hannah Montana. She's waaaaaaay gone by now … Not because you got naked but because you make great records.
Whether we like it or not, us females in the industry are role models and as such we have to be extremely careful what messages we send to other women. The message you keep sending is that its somehow cool to be prostituted … its so not cool Miley … its dangerous. Women are to be valued for so much more than their sexuality. We aren't merely objects of desire. I would be encouraging you to send healthier messages to your peers … that they and you are worth more than what is currently going on in your career. Kindly fire any motherfucker who hasn't expressed alarm, because they don't care about you.

Non avevo intenzione di scrivere questa lettera, ma oggi non ho fatto altro che evitare chiamate da vari quotidiani che speravano che io commentassi la tua dichiarazione su Rolling Stone secondo cui il video di Wrecking Ball è stato ideato per essere simile a quello di Nothing Compares… Quindi quello che segue è ciò che sento di dover dire… E viene detto con spirito materno e con amore.
Sono estremamente preoccupata per te dal momento che chi ti sta intorno ti ha portata a credere, o ha incoraggiato la tua convinzione, che sia in qualche modo ‘figo’ apparire nuda e leccare martelli nei tuoi video. Così facendo oscurerai il tuo talento permettendo che tu venga svenduta, indipendentemente che sia il mondo della musica o tu stessa a farlo.
A lungo andare non deriverà nulla che non sia dannoso dall’aver permesso che ti sfruttassero, e trasmettere il messaggio secondo cui vieni valutata (persino da te) più per il tuo sex appeal che per il tuo evidente talento, non rappresenta in alcun modo una conquista per te stessa o qualsiasi altra giovane donna .
Sono felice di sentire che ricopro in qualche modo il ruolo di modello per te, e spero che grazie a questo presterai attenzione a ciò che ti dirò.
Al mondo della musica non frega un ca**o di te, o di chiunque altro di noi. Faranno in modo che tu ti prostituisca finchè ne varrà la pena, facendoti credere astutamente che sia tu a volerlo… E quando finirai in riabilitazione dopo esserti prostituita, ‘loro’ prenderanno il sole ad Antigua sui loro yatch, che avranno comprato avendo venduto il tuo corpo e tu rimarrai completamente sola.
A nessuno degli uomini che ti guardano con desiderio frega un ca**o di te, non farti ingannare. Molte donne confondono la lussuria con l’amore. Se ti desiderano sessualmente non vuol dire che gliene fot*a qualcosa di te. A maggior ragione se tu stessa dai stupidamente l’impressione di fot**rtene di te. Nessuno a cui stai a cuore sosterrebbe mai questo tuo farti sfruttare… e questo include anche te stessa.
Sì, sto insinuando che non ti importa di te stessa. Questo deve cambiare. Dovresti essere protetta come una preziosa giovane donna da chiunque lavori per te e chiunque ti stia attorno, compresa te. È un mondo pericoloso. Non incoraggiamo le nostre figlie ad andarci in giro nude perché le renderebbe prede delle bestie e di chi è peggio delle bestie, di cui un’angosciante maggioranza lavora nell’industria musicale e i relativi canali mediatici.
Il tuo valore va oltre il tuo corpo e il tuo sex appeal. Il mondo dello spettacolo non vede le cose in questa maniera, a loro piace vedere le cose al contrario, che siano riviste che ti vogliono in copertina o qualsiasi altra cosa… Non farti alcuna illusione… TUTTI loro ti vogliono perché stanno facendo soldi sul tuo essere giovane e sulla tua bellezza… e non potrebbero mai farlo se la tua giovinezza non ti rendesse cieca verso i demoni del mondo dello spettacolo. Se hai un cuore innocente non puoi riconoscere chi non ce l’ha.
Ripeto, hai abbastanza talento da non aver bisogno di permettere al mondo della musica di renderti una prostituta. Non dovresti neanche permettergli di prendersi gioco di te. Non pensare neanche per un momento che gliene freghi un ca**o di te. Loro sono lì solo per i soldi… Noi per la musica. È sempre stato così e sempre così sarà. Prima una giovane donna lo imparerà, prima potrà avere DAVVERO il controllo.
Hai anche detto su Rolling Stone che il tuo look si basa sul mio. Il look che ho scelto, l’ho scelto di proposito nel momento in cui la mia casa discografica mi incoraggiò a fare ciò che tu hai fatto. Ho preferito essere giudicata per il mio talento piuttosto che per il mio aspetto. Sono felice di aver fatto quella scelta, nondimeno perché, ora che ho quasi 57 anni, non mi ritrovo ad essere messa da parte, cosa che sfortunatamente accade a molti artisti di sesso femminile che hanno basato la loro immagine sulla loro sensualità, esaurita dopo aver raggiunto la mezza età.
Un reale conquista per te in quanto donna sarebbe rifiutare in futuro di far sfruttare il tuo corpo o la tua sensualità per fargli guadagnare soldi. Non ho neanche bisogno di chiederlo… Sono stata in questo mondo abbastanza a lungo da sapere che stanno facendo più soldi di te dal tuo mostrarti nuda. Non è per niente figo. E vengono inviati segnali pericolosi alle altre giovani donne. Per favore, in futuro rifiuta quando ti chiederanno di prostituirti. Il tuo corpo è per te e il tuo ragazzo. Non è per ogni maniaco in rete o ogni avido dirigente delle case discografiche che deve comprare diamanti alla propria amante.
Per quanto riguarda lo scrollarsi di dosso l’immagine di Hanna Montana… Chiunque ti dica che spogliarsi sia il modo migliore per farlo NON rispetta assolutamente il tuo talento e il tuo essere una giovane donna. I tuoi album sono abbastanza buoni da non renderti necessario un distacco da Hanna Montana. È mooooolto lontana ormai…. Non perché ti sei spogliata ma perché hai fatto grandi dischi.
Che ci piaccia o no, noi femmine nell’industria assumiamo il ruolo di modelli e per questo dobbiamo essere estremamente attente a quali messaggi mandiamo alle altre donne. Il messaggio che continui a mandare è che sia in qualche modo figo prostituirsi… Non è figo Miley… è pericoloso. Le donne devo essere valutate per molto altro oltre alla sensualità. Non siamo semplicemente oggetti di desiderio. Vorrei incoraggiarti a mandare messaggi più sani ai tuoi coetanei.. Che loro e tu siete molto più di quello che sta accadendo nella tua carriera. Licenzia gentilmente ogni figlio di putt**a che non ti ha allertata, perché non gli importa nulla di te.

I also read about Britney, I believe it was, How they make her dress very sexy, more then she wants to, while she is singing. The letter above I see, I agree, they don't care about the people themselves, only the money they are making off them. Sad! I hope the verdict of MJ , Mother and children, though if MJ is alive, it was probably a good thing, but also, it let the other Entertainers See and hopefully, they will take a stand!!! . -

Michael vuole accendere i riflettori sull'industria discografica e tutti i suoi sistemi, al fine di costringere l'artista a fare ciò che vuole .... fare i soldi anche a scapito dello stesso artista .... ora si sta muovendo qualcosa .. . il processo hai ragione con Michael dal vivo quindi non è sbagliato ... il problema è che al posto del resto del mondo pensa di essere morto e poi i giurati (purché anche loro non sono attori hahaha) non ha fatto un buon lavoro!
