.“Scared Of The Moon” – The little song that could!

When the King of Pop passed away on June 25, 2009 he had unfinished business. No, I’m not talking about the fifty ill-fated ‘This Is It’ concerts that awaited him in London. I’m talking about music – and lots of it.
Michael Jackson is notorious for taking longer than most artists to complete and release studio albums. This is because he was a perfectionist. For each album Jackson and his collaborators would work on more material than they needed, selecting only the very best tracks for the official release.
“As usual [Michael] goes in the studio and he does a lot of stuff, like hundreds of tapes and stuff, you know, and it was great,” recalls Quincy Jones – producer of Jackson’s ‘Off The Wall’, ‘Thriller’ and ‘Bad’ albums.
“And ['Bad'] is the [album] where I asked him to write all the tunes,” continues Jones. “I could see him just growing as an artist and understanding production and all that stuff. Michael had written thirty-three songs, and they were saying, ‘Well okay it’s showdown time – we gotta pick it.’ … You can’t put thirty-three songs on a record. And he’d written some fantastic stuff! Really, really fantastic.”
One of the thirty-three songs that Jackson had written during the sessions that ultimately resulted in 1987′s ‘Bad’ album was called “Scared Of The Moon”. It did not make the final cut and for many years remained unknown to fans and unreleased.
“We used to record on tape,” recalls Brad Sundberg – Jackson’s longtime studio technical director and engineer. ”Big two-inch, 24-track tapes.”
Matt Forger, another of Jackson’s longtime collaborators and studio engineers, recorded the original demo to “Scared Of The Moon” at Westlake Studios. Jackson, a true professional, laid down all the vocals in a single session.
“They just did the background vocals, the lead vocal and the piano. That was it,” adds Sundberg.
“Then Matt broke the number one rule that you never break – he gave Michael the master tape. And once you hand anything to Michael Jackson you may as well just chuck it off a pier because you’re never ever going to see it again.”
A month or two passed by after recording Jackson’s “Scared Of The Moon” vocals, before Forger got a call from the engineer at Evergreen Studios.
“The engineer was there at Evergreen, calling Matt, saying, ‘Hey I’ve got this Michael Jackson session for ‘Scared Of The Moon’. Michael is here and the string players are here but we don’t have a tape. Can you run the tape over?’ And Matt’s like, ‘I don’t have the tape… I gave it to Michael!’”
So they went back and forth for a while, trying to figure out what could be done.
Fortunately, Matt still had a cassette copy of the original session, so he drove the cassette over to Evergreen. It wasn’t the original multitrack, but it was something.
They the proceeded to transfer the cassette tape onto the new multitrack, recorded the strings onto the multitrack, and then mixed it down.
“Now, from a recording engineer’s standpoint that’s just breaking every rule in the book,” says Sundberg of their experiment. “You can not take a vocal from a cassette and then put it back onto a multitrack and have it still sound that good.”
“Cassettes always have a little bit of hiss or warble, and I told Matt that it’s pure genius,” continues Sundberg. “It’s just absolutely amazing that it worked because that was the original vocal, and it was just a hokey, cute little song that Michael wanted to do – and we did dozens of those – we’d do lots of little snippets where Michael would have an idea and we would do a demo. But how ‘Scared Of The Moon’ came about technically shouldn’t have worked, but it does. It was like the little engine that could. It’s the little song that could.”
“Scared Of The Moon” was not selected for 1987′s ‘Bad’ album, and did not re-surface until around 1999, shortly after Jackson commenced collaborative sessions for the ‘Invincible’ album.
“There are things that just stuck in his mind,” says Michael Prince – who worked extensively as one of Jackson’s trusted studio engineers between 1995 and 2009.
“Sometimes he writes new songs, and sometimes he wants to bring up something from the past that he knows is an unpolished gem.”
“I remember we did a little work on ‘Scared Of The Moon’ for the ‘Invincible’ album, actually. And I remember Steve Porcaro joking, ‘Oh that song again?’ It’s so funny because I’d never heard it before. But that’s Michael’s way of doing things – he always revisited some of his favourite stuff. He’d say, ‘Why didn’t we put this on our last album? Let’s listen again. Can we make it any better?’ Sometimes it makes it on the album and sometimes it doesn’t.”
In the end, the little work that was done on “Scared Of The Moon” during the ‘Invincible’ sessions was not applied to the pre-existing version of the song, and it went back into the vault in its pre-’Bad’ state.
Then, in November 2004, Sony Music Entertainment’s Epic Records released a career-spanning box set of Michael Jackson’s finest work, consisting of both released and unreleased material. The set, called ‘The Ultimate Collection’, features a newly mixed version of “Scared Of The Moon”.

"Scared Of The Moon" - La piccola canzone che avrebbe potuto essere( grande)!

Quando il Re del Pop è scomparso il 25 giugno 2009 era in sospeso No, non sto parlando dei 50 concerti del 'This Is It' che lo attendevano a Londra. Sto parlando di musica - ce n'è tantissima.
Michael Jackson è noto per essersi sempre preso molto tempo in studio, rispetto a molti altri artisti per completare e pubblicare un album.. Questo è perché era un perfezionista. Per ogni album Jackson e i suoi collaboratori,lavoravano su molto più del materiale che gli serviva , selezionando alla fine, i migliori brani per il rilascio ufficiale.
"Come al solito [Michael] entrava in studio e preparava tantissime tracce, centinaia di nastri ect, si sa, ed era fantastico", ricorda Quincy Jones - produttore di Jackson 'Off The Wall', 'Thriller' e gli album 'Bad'.
"Bad è l'album per il quale gli avevo chiesto di scrivere tutti i brani, continua Jones. "Vedevo che stava crescendo come artista e come produttore, riusciva a capire meglio tutto quello che ruotava intorno( alla produzione). Michael aveva scritto 33 melodie e così ci siamo detti: 'Beh va bene ora è la resa dei conti- Dobbiamo fare una selezione' ... Non si può mettere 33 canzoni su un disco. E aveva scritto della roba fantastica! Davvero, davvero fantastica. "
Uno delle 33 canzoni che Jackson aveva scritto durante le sessioni che alla fine non è entrata a far parte dell'album finito del 1987 " Bad" si chiamava "Scared Of The Moon". Non aveva ancora la finitura conclusiva e per molti anni è rimasta sconosciuta ai fans, e parte degli inediti..
"Noi registravamo su nastri", ricorda Brad Sundberg - direttore tecnico e ingegnere del suono per molto tempo di Jackson "grandi due pollici, nastri a 24 tracce"
Matt Forger, un altro dei collaboratori per molti anni, di Jackson e suo ingegnere in studio, racconta di come la canzone "Scared Of The Moon" venne registrata ai Westlake Studios. Jackson era, un vero professionista, registrò tutte le singole voci in una singola sessione.
"Fece i cori, la voce solista e la parte al pianoforte. Lui era così "aggiunge Sundberg.
"Dopo di che Matt infranse la regola numero uno, che di solito non infrangeva mai -dette a Michael il nastro master. Date una cosa a Michael Jackson e potete considerare di averla gettata dentro un molo, perché è sicuro che non la rivedrete."
Un mese o due più tardi dalla sessione di registrazione vocale di "Scared Of The Moon" Forger ricevette una telefonata da un ingegnere presso gli Studios Evergreen.
"L'ingegnere che era agli Studios Evergreen chiamò Matt dicendogli, 'Hey , sono in una sessione di Michael Jackson per ' Scared Of The Moon '. Michael è qui e gli addetti ai lavori sono qui, ma non abbiamo il nastro. Possiamo avere il nastro per inciderci sopra ' E Matt 'come,' Non ho il nastro ... l'ho dato a Michael! '"
Così sono andato avanti e indietro per un po ', cercando di capire cosa potevo inventarmi.
Fortunatamente, Matt aveva ancora una copia della registrazione in una cassetta della prima sessione, per cui la portò agli studios Evergreen. Non era la multitraccia originale , ma era qualcosa.
Così utilizzarono la registrazione singola per inserirla nella multitraccia, registrando sopra le singole parti e poi mixando con il basso.
"Ora, da un punto di vista strettamente tecnico, nell'effettuare una registrazione, è un pò come rompere ogni regola", spiega Sundberg sull'esperimento. "Non si può prendere il vocale dalla registrazione di una cassetta e poi rimetterlo su una multitraccia sempre che si voglia sentire ancora bene il suono"
"Le cassette hanno sempre un po di fruscìì e strani suoni e dissi a Matt che era un idea geniale" continua Sundberg. "Non ho idea di come abbia fatto a funzionare, perché quella non era la registrazione originale, era come una sorta di canticchiare carino fatto da Michael di una canzone che avrebbe voluto realizzare - ce n'era a decine di quelle registrazioni- un sacco di piccoli frammenti o di idee di Michael per realizzare delle canzoni. Il modo in cui 'Scared Of The Moon' è stata realizzata non avrebbe dovuto funzionare e invece funzionava eccome. E 'stato come un piccolo motore che può diventare potente. " Una canzoncina che poteva diventare grande".
"Scared Of The Moon" non venne selezionata come canzone parte dell'album 'Bad', e non ha rivisto la luce fino al 1999, quando Jackson iniziò le sessioni per l'album 'Invincible'.
"Ci sono cose che sono rimaste li, nella sua mente", dice Michael Prince - che ha lavorato a lungo come uno dei tecnici del suono di Jackson tra il 1995 e il 2009.
"A volte scrivevamo nuove canzoni e qualche volta tornavamo a lavorare su qualcosa dal passato che era rimasta li come un gioiello grezzo"
"Mi ricordo che abbiamo ripreso per un pò anche 'Scared Of The Moon 'per l'album' Invincible ', in realtà. E mi ricordo che Steve Porcaro scherzava, 'Oh di nuovo quella canzone?' Era divertente perchè fingeva di non averla mai sentita prima. Ma questo era il modo in cui Michael lavorava - tornava sulle cose che preferiva e che erano rimaste indietro. Diceva: 'Perché non abbiamo messo questa nell'album? Ascoltiamola di nuovo. Possiamo fare di meglio? ' A volte era adatta all'album a volte no".
Alla fine, il poco lavoro che è stato fatto su "Scared Of The Moon" durante le sessioni di 'Invincible' non migliorò la versione pre-esistente della canzone, che tornò nel cavò, dove era finita nel periodo pre Bad .
Poi, nel novembre 2004, Sony Music Entertainment Epic Records rilascio un box set dei migliori lavori di Michael Jackson, composto sia da materiale inedito che di canzone note . Il set, chiamato 'The Ultimate Collection', portò alla luce una versione appena migliorata di "Scared Of The Moon".
