The Jacksons come to Long Island

According to the Jacksons, the fans want them back. They answered the call by re-forming for their Unity Tour, which comes to the NYCB Theatre at Westbury Friday night. However, everything is not as easy as A, B, C or 1, 2, 3.

A permanent hole was left in the center of the group with the 2009 passing of the King of Pop, Michael Jackson. But despite losing their lead singer and main attraction, the Jacksons -- brothers Jermaine, Tito, Jackie and Marlon -- have decided to soldier on. (Randy is not touring with them this time.)

Newsday recently spoke with Jermaine Jackson, 58, who was on tour in Holland, about what sparked the reunion, filling MJ's shoes and their future recording plans.

What made you guys reunite to tour after all this time?

There have been so many emails from fans asking us to come out. We've been mourning Michael's passing forever and felt if we could play our music, it would help us heal.

How do you pay tribute to Michael onstage?

We do a lot of his music like "Gone Too Soon," "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough," "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin' " and "Rock With You." It's really exciting, but at the same time it gets us through it. I'd be crying through rehearsals because he was always on the right of me. I miss him so much.

Is it difficult to fill his shoes on vocals?

A lot of people didn't think we could do this because Michael wasn't there. But they forget that I'm a lead singer. I can sing anything that Michael sung, even when he was here. We miss him, and I wish he was helping me sing some of this stuff, but we make it work.

If Michael was alive, do you think he would have reunited with all the brothers to tour again as the Jacksons?

We were going to join him on the last part of the O2 arena shows in 2009. If he was around today, we'd be touring the world playing stadiums and in the studio recording new music. His spirit is onstage with us all the time.

The last time the Jackson brothers performed with Michael was Sept. 10, 2001, at Madison Square Garden. What was that moment like?

It felt like "Motown 25" and the Victory Tour coming together. I remember having the greatest time in rehearsals at Jackie's house. But, we never knew that would be our last time onstage together.

Why isn't Randy in the fold?

He's the business person taking care of a lot of stuff with the trials [ongoing lawsuits with entertainment group AEG and Dr. Conrad Murray]. We want him out there, but he's busy wrapped up in work because he wants to make sure that things are done right and justice prevails.

Are there plans to do any more recording?

After this tour, we will record some hot new music mixing classic Jacksons with what is going on today. We may do some stuff with David Guetta.

How would you describe the chemistry between the brothers now versus then?

Nothing changes, we are just older. The energy and the dancing are all there. We have so many inside jokes, and we clown around onstage while we are performing. Jackie is the serious one who gets on all of us. He was always like that. When he gets nervous, he wants us all to rehearse.

Because you grew up in the business, does that instill a certain confidence giving you an edge?

We've never been nervous onstage. We are more comfortable under a spotlight than anywhere else. We don't really feel competition but simply do what we do. There's nothing we are afraid of singing, whether it be country, pop or blues.

What's been your parents' involvement in the reunion?

They've been to a lot of shows. My mother and father still come backstage and give us notes the way they did when we were kids in Gary, Ind.

How would you describe the Jackson mystique that captivates people?

We all wanted to study the greats and become greater. Our goal was always to blow people's minds and do something that they've never seen before. If you are not doing that, then you are just like everybody else.

Do you see the seeds of the next generation of Jackson kids becoming performers?

Look out for my sons, Jaafar, 17 and Jermajesty, 12. There's four years between them, like Michael and I. They have our voices when we were that age. They can do Jackson 5 stuff and all the dance moves. They are going to be polished, because I'm on them.

Looking back, do you regret not moving with the group to CBS in the mid-'70s?

Yes, I regret it because there are songs I wish I was on. I always joke with the brothers saying, "That song could have been better if I was on it!" They crack up and laugh. But I got a chance to work with Whitney Houston, Stephanie Mills and Berry Gordy behind the scenes. It kind of worked out, but I missed them so much during those years.

On this tour, you are playing smaller venues than you normally played with Michael. How does that affect you?

If it's a good show, journalists will give you a good write-up whether its 100,000 people or 2,000 people. If it's a bad show, you are going to get a bad write-up regardless the crowd size. We always want to make every show the best we can. This show is up close and personal.
