Jackson's music in the spotlight

When Michael Jackson died four years ago at age 50, it generated a cottage industry of tabloid headlines that continues with this summer's wrongful death trial of concert promoter AEG Live.

Too often lost in the media frenzy, unfortunately, is the enduring power of Jackson's music, an undeniably timeless catalog of hits from the Jackson 5's bubble-gum pop to the evolution of Jackson's solo career.

The music will be the focus of "In the Studio With MJ," an in-depth studio seminar that looks at Jackson's creative process through the eyes and ears of Brad Sundberg. An Orlando audio design technician, Sundberg, 49, worked with the King of Pop for 18 years on projects ranging from recording sessions to installing the audio systems at the singer's Neverland Ranch.
Powered by an assortment of unreleased studio outtakes and home videos, the Aug. 31 seminar at Starke Lake Studios in Ocoee will be the third in a series that has visited Paris and New York in the past year. Sundberg hopes to book events in Stockholm, Toronto and Australia.

If you'd like to delve into Jackson's well-documented eccentricities, it's not for you.
We keep the garbage outside," Sundberg says. "We don't get into any of the negative publicity and tabloid stuff. This is a place for people who want to come and just hear about Michael and his time in the recording studio. I think that's where he felt the safest."

Sundberg started working with Jackson in the mid-1980s in time to be part of the production of "Captain EO," the 3-D film that debuted at Walt Disney World's Epcot in 1986. He also assisted in the recording studio on "Bad" (1987), "Dangerous" (1991) and "Blood on the Dance Floor: HIStory in the Mix" (1997).

"In that time, we would just move into a studio," Sundberg says. "We'd always build him a private lounge, a place where he could chill out, make phone calls, have meetings. We'd bring in Disney stuff, movie posters, things like that."
One item was a corkboard, where the progress of songs was monitored on notecards.

"You could walk into his office and see the songs that were really starting to flourish," he says. "You could see them being moved higher and higher on the board."

Unreleased versions of songs are used to illustrate the singer's songwriting process.

"You hear him talking and explaining what he wants to do with a song," Sundberg says. "On other songs, I break it down without the drums, without the guitars, down to its core."

The seminar is based on events that Sundberg witnessed firsthand, including a family-style meal modeled on Jackson's tradition of hosting a "Family Friday" weekly dinner for crew members.

"On Fridays, he'd have the wives and kids come in, so there would be maybe 20 of us in a studio, sitting on road cases and sharing a meal together," Sundberg says. "Stories would be swapped and there would be laughter. It was something he really valued and appreciated and I've done the best job I can of replicating that."

The meal is included in the $199 admission. It's not a cheap ticket, but Sundberg limits the crowd to roughly 50 people to enhance the intimacy.

"If I do my job right, I make Michael very human," Sundberg says. "I've never worked for anybody as kind as Michael."
