A court has ended the first week of jury selection in a civil case over Michael Jackson's death with 60 potential jurors selected.

Jury selection will resume Monday and is expected to stretch into the following week in an effort to find enough people to hear a case filed by Jackson's mother against concert giant AEG Live.

Katherine Jackson claims the company failed to properly investigate and supervise the doctor convicted of involuntary manslaughter for Jackson's June 2009 death.

Potential jurors have filled out a 24-page questionnaire that assesses their knowledge of the case, Jackson's family and their views on celebrities and multimillion dollar verdicts.

In-person questioning of potential jurors will begin on Wednesday.

AEG has denied wrongdoing.

Dr Murray, who was convicted of manslaughter for administering the drug propofol to the late Michael Jackson, is not named in the lawsuit, but the judge agreed to allow him to be brought to court from jail to testify outside the jury's presence.

The Grenada-born, Trinidad-raised cardiologist has said he would invoke his Fifth Amendment right not to testify, but lawyers said he could possibly talk about non-criminal issues.

Judge Palazuelos has refused to bar AEG from raising the subject of the child molestation charges that were brought against Jackson years ago.

Katherine Jackson's lawyers claim the subject is irrelevant because her son was acquitted, but Judge Palazuelos said she would allow testimony that Michael Jackson became despondent and reliant on drugs because of the charges.

AEG attorney Marvin Putnam maintained his client never hired Murray and that the cardiologist had been one of many doctors who had treated the singer in the past, according to a CBS Los Angeles report.

The wrongful death trial of concert promoter AEG Live filed by Michael Jackson’s mother and three children will not be televised, a judge decided Friday, in LA.

CNN had requested its camera be allowed in the courtroom during the trial, but Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Yvette Palazuelos, issued a ruling Friday denying the request.

California law leaves the decision to the trial judge’s discretion based on 19 factors to be considered. Palazuelos did not say in her ruling what factors swayed her decision.

AEG Live’s lawyer argued televising the trial could create a frenzy among Jackson fans at the courthouse that could pose a threat to witnesses.

Michael’s family lawyers argued in favour of having a camera in court, saying it would be the best way for the world to see justice done. Without cameras, only a handful of journalists will have seats in the small courtroom in downtown Los Angeles.

The Jacksons’ lawsuit accuses AEG Live of liability in Michael’s death through the negligent hiring of Conrad Murray, the physician who is serving a prison sentence after being convicted of involuntary manslaughter.

AEG Live contends Murray was never its employee, but was chosen and hired by Michael.

If AEG Live is found liable by a jury, it could mean a multibillion dollar judgment for the Jacksons, based on the potential earnings of Michael Jackson had he lived past his 50th birthday.

Opening statements and the first witness could be heard in about two weeks in the trial that is expected to last for two to three months.

The pool of potential jurors reached 60 Friday afternoon after four days of eliminating jurors for hardship reasons. The process will continue Monday and Tuesday or until about 100 potential jurors are identified. On Wednesday, the lawyers will start the ‘voir dire’ process of eliminating jurors, based on cause or their jury strikes allowed under court rules. ‘Voir Dire’ is a legal phrase that refers to a diversity of procedures associated with jury trials. It originally referred to an oath taken by jurors to tell the truth (Latin verum dicere), i.e., to say what is true, what is objectively accurate or personally honest, or both. It comes from the Anglo-Norman language.

Until then, the lawyers are studying their answers to a long questionnaire the potential jurors completed. The process is expected to continue for another week, perhaps ending around April 16 or 17.

It is unclear how soon after a jury is seated that the judge will have lawyers deliver opening statements and call the first witness. Some judges allow the jury a day or so to take care of personal business after being selected.

Jurors were being sworn in last week for the suit against AEG Live.

The promoters are accused of negligently hiring Dr Conrad Murray – the personal medic sentenced to four years in 2011 for Jacko’s involuntary manslaughter by administering the surgical anaesthetic Propofol.

The family, led by Jacko’s mother Katherine, 82, also claim AEG tried to push the star into a tour that he was not physically capable of handling.

The case, due to start later this month, is expected to last about three months.

The lawsuit filed by Michael Jackson's mother and children blaming entertainment giant AEG for the singer's death is expected to take more than four months to try, the judge said last week.


The length of the trial was the court's first concern as jury selection began April 2 in a downtown courtroom where Jackson's towering legacy will be pitted against a business enterprise that has had a profound influence on the entertainment scene in Los Angeles.

Thirty-five potential jurors were brought into Superior Court Judge Yvette M. Palazuelos' courtroom and given a questionnaire to see who could take that much time from their personal and work lives. A second panel of 35 was scheduled to be given the same questionnaire.

Groups of jurors will continue to be brought in each day until a pool of 80 to 100 people has been chosen. From that group, attorneys will select 12 jurors and five alternates who will decide the case.

Attorneys estimate that jury selection alone could take two to three weeks.

More than 60 news organizations from countries including Japan, France, Germany and Australia have asked for seats to cover the trial, according to Pat Kelly, a court spokeswoman. There is space for roughly 10 reporters in the courtroom.

Last week, Palazuelos heard a motion from CNN asking that the cable network be allowed to broadcast the trial live. The judge has not ruled on the motion.

The suit filed by Katherine Jackson, Michael Joseph Jackson Jr., Paris-Michael Katherine Jackson and Prince Michael Jackson II, alleges that AEG negligently hired and supervised Dr. Conrad Murray, who — in an attempt to help the singer sleep — gave him a fatal dose of the anesthetic propofol. They say that AEG pushed Jackson to prepare for a tour that he was not physically up to.

AEG says that it was Jackson's decision to hire Murray and that the company recommended a British doctor.

Concert promoter AEG aims to shed blame for singer's 2009 death

The latest super-trial involving Michael Jackson will hinge on a few key questions: Did executives from AEG Live, Jackson's concert promoter, hire Dr. Conrad Murray? And did they pressure Murray into pumping Jackson full of drugs so he could sleep properly and be ready to perform his scheduled multimillion-dollar shows at London's O2 Arena?

Jackson's family – mother Katherine and children Paris, Prince Michael and Blanket – argue that AEG is at fault for the singer's unexpected death after an overdose of sleep medication on June 25th, 2009. They're suing AEG for $40 billion, claiming wrongful death. "The truth about what happened to Michael, which AEG has tried to keep hidden from the public since the day Michael died, is finally emerging," the family's attorney, Kevin Boyle, said earlier this year. "We look forward to the trial where the rest of the story will come to light." (Attorneys for the family and AEG would not comment to Rolling Stone.)

The trial began last week with jury selection. It could last from two to four months, with potentially dramatic testimony from all three Jackson children as well as high-profile witnesses such as the musicians Prince, Diana Ross, Quincy Jones, Lisa Marie Presley, Jackson's brothers and Sharon Osbourne.

The family's goal is to make an emotional case to the Los Angeles Superior Court jury, painting AEG as a money-hungry promoter. The $40 billion claim may be to draw attention to the case for public-relations purposes, or to create a strong starting point for a settlement negotiation – or it may actually be what the Jacksons believe they can win. "They may feel they're going to fight this to the bitter end because [AEG] killed Michael," explains Stan Goldman, a Loyola Law School law professor who teaches criminal law and legal ethics and has closely followed trials involving Michael Jackson over the years. "They may feel as strongly about getting them punished as they did about Conrad Murray being punished." (Murray is in prison after a 2009 involuntary manslaughter conviction.)

Supporting the Jacksons' case are emails reportedly sent by AEG executives in the 2009 run-up to Jackson's O2 shows. In March 2009, Randy Phillips, the company's president, wrote in an email to his superiors, "MJ is locked in his room drunk and despondent. I [am] trying to sober him up. I screamed at him so loud the walls are shaking. He is an emotionally paralyzed mess riddled with self-loathing and doubt now that it is show time." At the time, Phillips was offering a very different sentiment in public: "In order to do this deal, Michael had to submit to a five-hour physical by an independent, third-party physician picked by the insurance carrier," he said then. "He passed with flying colors."

The family is likely to argue that the emails show AEG officials not only knew about Jackson's inability to perform, but they pushed him to do so anyway. While AEG's attorneys argue vehemently that it was Jackson himself, and not AEG, who hired Murray, one internal email suggests otherwise. "We want to remind [Murray] that it is AEG, not MJ, who is paying his salary," the company's co-chief executive, Paul Gongaware, wrote 11 days before Jackson's death. "We want to remind him what is expected of him."

It's unclear how much credibility these emails will have to a jury, or whether Judge Yvette Palazuelos will find them admissible. "Just one email isn't by itself enough," says Mina Sirkin, a Woodland Hills, California lawyer who specializes in estate planning and trusts. "But if it does get admitted during trial, it could be pretty damaging."

Nonetheless, AEG's goal will be to insist that Jackson himself hired Murray and gave him instructions. "I don't know how you can't look to Mr. Jackson's responsibility there. He was a grown man," the company's attorney, Marvin Putnam, told CNN. "Mr. Jackson is a person who was known to doctor-shop. He was known to be someone who would tell one doctor one thing and another doctor something else."

Jackson's death was due to a fatal dose of propofol, a powerful anesthetic; Murray gave it to him after Jackson begged for the drug he called "milk." In a bizarre phone interview with CNN's Anderson Cooper last week, which involved the doctor singing Nat King Cole's "The Little Boy That Santa Claus Forgot" at length on cable television, Murray suggested he might not take the Fifth Amendment if called to the stand during the AEG trial. "If I testify, I'll testify very honestly," he said. "Michael said to me, 'I no longer want to be a band for my family,' but all you see today is a continuation of that."

AEG's attorneys will try to paint Jackson as a drug-addicted pop star who would have demanded and received the sleep-inducing drugs regardless of outside influence. Putnam has suggested AEG will drag the star's child-molestation accusations into the trial because they "resulted in an incredible increase in his drug intake." Adds Loyola's Goldman, "Some of the more sensational stuff would be coming out with the defense case. They're the ones who want to bring out the child-molesting [trial] and the toll it took on him."

So far, the biggest decision Judge Palazuelos has made in the trial has been to ban CNN cameras from the courtroom, thus preventing an O.J. Simpson-style legal circus. Says Sirkin, "They just don't want this to become another public fiasco." It might already be too late for that.

The pool of potential jurors to hear a case filed over Michael Jackson's death has grown to 104 people.

Attorneys and a judge concluded their second week of hardship screening on Friday.

In-person questioning of the panel will begin on Monday. It is expected to take multiple days for attorneys to select a panel of 12 jurors and several alternates to hear the case. Jurors must be available for 90 trial days.

The group of 103 has been given a 24-page questionnaire assessing their knowledge about the case.

The lawsuit was filed by Jackson's mother against concert giant AEG Live. The suit claims the promoter of Jackson's planned comeback concerts failed to properly investigate the doctor convicted of involuntary manslaughter for the singer's death.

AEG has denied all wrongdoing.

Murray is currently serving a four-year sentence at the institution following his conviction for involuntary manslaughter in Michael’s 2009 death.

Katherine is said to believe AEG sent its lawyers or other officers to speak with Murray about the litigation, possibly to coach him or to garner information to help with their defence.
Murray’s lawyer has slammed the suggestion.

"I believe the subpoena is a rather desperate, last-minute attempt by counsel for KJ and the children to try and find or create a surreptitious relationship between Dr. Murray and AEG,” attorney Valerie Wass told the website.

"There is and has been no such relationship,” she added.

The family is suing the firm for what they allege was negligence in hiring Murray to oversee Michael’s health while he prepared for his final series of concerts.

The $40 billion lawsuit accuses AEG Live of helping to cause Michael’s death by “pressuring him to prepare for his 2009 comeback concerts, despite his fragile health”.

The suit also says that AEG Live executives “hired and supervised Dr. Murray”, who has since been stripped of his medical licence.

Michael died from acute propofol and benzodiazepine intoxication after suffering from cardiac arrest at his Los Angeles home under Murray’s supervision. The singer was 50-years-old.

TMZ earlier reported Murray has been added to the witness list in the AEG case.

Also set to testify are the King of Pop’s three children, several of his siblings, choreographer Kenneth Ortega, Quincy Jones, Diana Ross, Spike Lee and the star’s ex-wife Lisa Marie Presley.
