Katherine Jackson seeking billions in damages over Michael’s death

CALIFORNIA, United States, Friday April 5, 2013 – Michael Jackson’s mother Katherine is seeking US$40 billion in damages against concert giant AEG Live, which was promoting the “This Is It” comeback tour for the pop icon at the time of his death in 2009.

Katherine Jackson claims that AEG negligently hired and failed to oversee Dr Conrad Murray, the Caribbean-born cardiologist later convicted of involuntary manslaughter in the singer's death.

When the case gets underway, Mrs Jackson and the legendary entertainer's two eldest children, Paris and Prince, are expected to testify about his last days.

Jury selection in the civil suit began on Tuesday.

Last week, legal rulings by Superior Court Judge Yvette Palazuelos anticipated a three-month trial that will revisit events preceding the King of Pop's death from an anaesthetic overdose.

Dr Murray, who was convicted of manslaughter for administering the drug propofol to the late Michael Jackson, is not named in the lawsuit, but the judge agreed to allow him to be brought to court from jail to testify outside the jury's presence.

The Grenada-born, Trinidad-raised cardiologist has said he would invoke his Fifth Amendment right not to testify, but lawyers said he could possibly talk about non-criminal issues.

Judge Palazuelos has refused to bar AEG from raising the subject of the child molestation charges that were brought against Jackson years ago.

Katherine Jackson's lawyers claim the subject is irrelevant because her son was acquitted, but Judge Palazuelos said she would allow testimony that Michael Jackson became despondent and reliant on drugs because of the charges.

AEG attorney Marvin Putnam maintained his client never hired Murray and that the cardiologist had been one of many doctors who had treated the singer in the past, according to a CBS Los Angeles report.
